question about type pointer

In the project i run the code is : OPN DB32 L #870 T #SamplePointer (It is declare as Int) ************************************ L #SamplePointer SLD 3 LAR1 L DBD [AR1,P#0.0] What i need to know is why next to # of the pointer is 0.0,what does it mean?can i write any number i like? Splitted from Format of the parameter Type POINTER.

Hi psimitri1, as far as I know, the p#0.0 is sort of an pointer-offset. You loaded your pointer into AR1 by using LAR1. So byusing L DBD[AR1, P#0.0] you load the element at the specified pointer area. If you would use, though, i.e. L DBD[AR1, P#2.0], you would load the area specified by the pointer + 2 bytes (so basicaly next word), +4 would go +4B (1 DW), etc. Hope it helps & is the (right) answer to the question.

Just an addon - imagine you have val: ARRAY [0..99] of UDT1, UDT1 = REAL+INT+BYTE+8xBOOL and you need to sum INTs for elements 40..49 inside array. Then right thing will be 1) Set pointer to val[40] 2) L W[AR1,P#4.0] 3) Add it to #Sum 4) Increase AR1 by P#8.0 (UDT1 length). 5) Repeat 9 more times So basically it's just offset - can be only fixed number (i mean you can't use variable instead and write something like L W[AR1, MD0]), so the only application i know is above - all other use [AR1, P#0.0].
