I am trying to interface between s7400 plc & S5 i/os`using IM 463-2 and IM 314. I have found[i/o area address sttings i.e P area, Q area IM3 area & IM4 area]in the hardware settingsof IM 463-2 . Can anybody cleare me what are the meanings of these areas.Give me the details.

It are different I/O areas, for SIMATIC S5 you have only 256 Byte I/O per type of area. So is the P-area the area where is a Proces Image for the Inputs/Outputs until address 128. Above that addressthere is no Proces Image and that area is most of the time just by Analog In- and Outputs.

The Q-area didn't have a Proces Image and is a 256 byte In- and Output area which is laying above the P-area. Then the IM3- and IM4- area are again 2 * 256 byte In- and Output without Proces Image.

So it are only different I/O areas for the SIMATIC S5, for the S7-400 you can define the Proces Image by your self and have the hole I/O area (different I/O areas for the 400-CPUs and also for the S7-300).

Can you give us a sample program of S5 to S7 migrationusing IM 463-2 to IM 314 in order to make us understand properly for this..
