WinCC Process Archive Tags stored as compressed tags

SCADA-Guy Posts: 11 Rating: (1)	We recently migrated from WinCC v6.0 (SP4) to WinCC v6.2 (HF5). We are running a client/server system with redundant Servers, 10 standard WinCC clients and 12 Terminal Services clients (10 MP370 touch panels & 2 wireless MOBIC devices). This is our first WinCC project. We are archiving about 2000 tags - analog and binary - for trending and reporting. In v6.0 (SP4) we had Process Archives setup for TagLogging-Slow and all tags were setup as analog tags. Our configurationhad all tags being stored as Uncompressed tags in the SQL db. In v6.2 (HF5) we duplicated the Process Archive configuration, but we discovered that all tags are being stored as Compressed tags in the SQL db no matter how we adjust the configuration settings. Does anyone know how to configure the v6.2 Process Archives/tags so they will be stored as UnCompressed tags? We will greatly appreciate any input on this matter. We created severalProcess Archiveswith analog tags (i.e.,flow, level, pressure, etc.). We started the project and generated variable input data through the PLC to provide test data for the data collection process. After several hours, I opened the SQL Management Studio to inspect the data tables. I found that the TLG_S data segments are storingarchive tag data only in the 'dbo.TagCompressed' table, as<Binary Values>. Sincerely, I will checkif this behavior already happened in previous version. But, you intend to read these data directly by SQL query? Youwon't use the Connectivity Pack and OLE DB Provider of Siemens?

SCADA-Guy Posts: 11 Rating: (1)	I intended to use the WinCC OLEDB Provider to coalesce the data stored in my WinCC database into custom tables/views. I would then use SQL to manipulate those tables/views to provide data to my Crystal Reports templates. Today I learned from Tech Support that v6.2 forces all archive tags to be logged as compressed data no matter how they are configured. This is not documented anywhere yet, except in my case notes, but the information came directly from Germany. So, my plan now is touse WinCC OLEDB Provider and Data Translation Services (DTS)to translate the stored (compressed) data from the WinCC database into a self-created database (uncompressed); the DTS process uses the WinCC OLEDB Provider to de-compress the dataso I can use SQL to arrange the data as needed to feed my Crystal Reports templates. What I am learning is that the recommended method for SQL data manipulation is through the WinCC OLEDB Provider & DTS to put the data in SQL compliant database outside of WinCC. I found the DTS procedure in the latest Connectivity Pack v6.2 documentation (updated from the web, not from the distribution CD which still contains the v6.0 information). Apparently, the use of SQL on the WinCC database can cause database corruption because the WinCC database is not fully SQL compliant. This is a most interesting learning process for me, as I am a SQL novice and had not heard of DTS until a few months ago. Thanks for your input.

I believe that these technologies will help you to create powerful reports. But, sincerely I don't believe that create a second DB (uncompressed) only to provide data for Crystal Reports be the better option. If I'm not deceived, the Crystal Reports from 8.5 version can read data by ADO objects. If I'm correct, you can read the WinCC DB inside your template, using ADO with Siemens's OLE DB Provider. But I'm not sure.

SCADA-Guy Posts: 11 Rating: (1)	I've been working on this but so far no results. This is mostly because I do not have enough knowledge of how to make the connections to the database. Last Friday we received Hotfix 8 for WinCC v6.2. This is supposed to update the OLEDB Provider and SQL 2005 SP1 so that DTS will work properly. We will be installing that soon, so my problem may be resolved. Thanks for your input. I find this forum has much useful information that clarifies the WinCC documentation.
