S7-1200 or S7-1500

Abdel-Qader Silver Member Joined: 1/5/2013 Last visit: 8/19/2025 Posts: 287 Rating: (16)	we are in process to purchase an S7-1200 CPUs. one PLC at the control station where the HMI is installed. and 8 PLCs each one will be installed in a power substation and we will use MODBUS RTU in order to communicate with Schneider SEPAM protection relay. We will use an open user communication (TCON,TDISCON, TSEND, and TRCV) in order for the control PLC (where the HMI exists) to receive the TAGs (readings and diagnosis data) from the 8 substation PLCs and also to send control commands from the HMI PLC to one of the substation PLCs. My questions: 1- 9 PLCs S7-1200 is good and enough for my design? or it is better to have S7-1500 at the HMI site and 8 S7-1200 in each substation? 2- in case we will purchase and use S7-1200: 2.a SIEMENS Standard 35mm DIN rail for 19 in cabinets (6ES5 710-8MA11) comes by default when purchase the S7-1200 CPU or it is must purchase alone? i mean this DIN rail is where to install the CPU and CP 1242-7 (GSM/GPRS) and the RS-485 modules? Thanks
