Hello,

My name is Adam; I'm a senior level engineering student at University of Houston-Downtown currently enrolled in my program capstone course Senior Projects. My partner and I have been assigned to do cascaded level control of a twin tank system.

One of the requirements of our project is that we have an HMI.  I have never developed an HMI before.

Right now I only have a preliminary display on the root screen.  How do I do the addressing to where the inputs and outputs are actually displayed?

If I understood you correctly, what you are asking for is in the general tab in the properties menu of whatever I/O element you create. First create an element from the tab on the right then point to whatever tag you desire.

The détails will vary depending on the model of HMI screen you will work with in this project, but the sequence is very often similar to what you wilkl see in this getting Started manual from Siemens (you should find similar manuals from every HMI manbufacturer):

Getting Started Basic Panels - Siemens

1. create a project, defining the caracteristics of the HMI panel you will use
2. create connections: how you will "talk" to your PLC (communications channel definition)
3. create tags: memory registers in the HMI software that will connect with the PLC registers you want to read or write to, or internal tags that will be used for the HMi only (for example, when you want to select different screens, navigate from one screen to another, show alarms...).
4. create screens that you will populate with static and animated symbols (pictures representing your process: tanks, motors, fans...),  input/output fileds that the operator can write in (to change a setpoint) or display (to show a present value of a PLC register), and control buttons to command the process (start/stop your control elements).
5. create alarm screens with display and acknowledge functions to warn the operator that the process is moving outside set limits
6. evaluate, correct, modify, try, retry and always have a cup of strong coffee available closeby.

@Adam: [TIP] When in TIA software you will see at the bottom left a button which switches between "Portal View" and "Project View". Activate the "Portal View". Find on the page (pane, left from centre) the words "Welcome Tour". There are some instruction video clips and links that may be of help a little.

A while back I had to program a make and model of PLC and HMI that I did not know so well. Instructions like mentioned above helped enough to know what questions to ask and kick-started the development. It may help you to get some idea.

The software I'm working with is TIA  version 13, and the HMI panel is TP700 Comfort.
