S7-300, profibus wireless gateways and TP170

Danielle Posts: 1275 Rating: (123)	Hi, I have a system in which a 315-2 PN/DP CPU needs to communicate with an ET200M and a TP170 through wireless Profibus-DP. The profibus gateways are the WA-PDPM and WA-PDPS, by Prosoft. The catch is these gateways were specified by the manufacturer, and somehow the information that they are for DP slaves only slipped by. On the S7 side the slave gateway (PDPS) is declared with no problem. The communication with the master gateway (PDPM), and with the ET200M also shows no trouble. However, the communication with the TP is giving us a lot of trouble. On ProTool or Flexible we need to choose the device the TP is communicating with, and clearly the gateway isn't there. The gateways' manual shows with detail how to add SLAVES to the master gateway PDPM... How could this communication be done? I'm not sure how far from the target I'd get with this, but could a DP/DP coupler help? Well... we're waiting to hear from the manufacturer... I'm not sure I've explained the problem right... I've just gt this information from this process, so I'm new to it as well.... but I hope someone can help... Thank you! Best regards, Danielle

As you might know PB is not create to be used with Wireless connections because the trannsmission speeds are very low, think of a maximum of 187k5. Also think about the Profibus cycle times which will be very high, think about seconds instead off milliseconds. Since you use a PN-CPU you can handle ethernet as well. I think it is much more interesting to have a look to the ethernet solutions. You might even try to suggest the use of a Scalance W788-1PRO/W786-1PRO combined with an IWLAN/PB Link PN IO to connect the panel as a PB slave behind this gateway. With the S7 Routing it should be possible to interconnected the panel.

J_Bell Posts: 5822 Rating: (412)	Dear Danielle, I see the situation as following. The System is set up that way that the TP is a DP Slave. But as far as I know does the TP not run DP Communication to the Master / PN Controller. It uses S7-Communication to get the Data from the PLC. So if you use a Gateway that is specifically designed forDP it will not work with a active node that runs S7-Communication over PROFIBUS. I fear there is a little mistake in the design. There was a misconception indeed, and a big one... we didn't know any wireless DP devices, so we let the supplier specify the stuff... I've requested support from Prosoft, and so far what I know is at least the local guy had never seen or heard of a DP slave which needed a driver to be configured. He didn't know the TP had to be a master either... the support guy from the US didn't know about the driver either... That's actually kinda funny, since in ProTool you have drivers for the AB PLC's, and ProSoft does I think pretty much all of their drivers! Anyway.. they asked for a little time, to try to find a similar case somewhere in the world. I also asked for Siemens support... At this moment I'm downloading some material from them, which supposedly can make the TP work as a slave... Honestly, I still don't really think it'll work... The first thing we thought when we saw we coundl't get the communication to work was the s7-communication... the gateways use their own database to pass on information, instead of s7-communication, and that couls be the big mess causer... The network speed isn't much of a problem here, since we don't have any fast input cards or critical commands on the remote side.. The manufacturer had also guaranteed a response time of about 30ms... even if it gets to 300ms it'll be ok for this application... The TP doesn't have Ethernet, so that's not really an option... Right now, if the Prosoft people don't find a good solution, we're faced with 2 possibilities: - using a ET200S-CPU, instead of the ET200M... For that we'd have to check the changes in costs, and also check if Siemens has this kind of product here, 'cause they usually take 60 days to deliver even simple stuff, and we don't have that kind of time... - using a S7-200 as a "gateway"... that works fine, with low costs. But it's a veeeeery ugly architecture!!!! The TP becomes a slave to the S7-200, which works fine with the wireless network... but that means extra relpacement parts, software and training for the customer... Anyway... I'm still not happy with this... I've finished downloading the Slave-TP stuff, and I'll pass it on to the technical team which is conducting the tests... I'll post the results, and anything I get from the Prosoft technical support.. wish me luck! Thank you all! Danielle

Danielle Posts: 1275 Rating: (123)	Hi, Just to let you know we've had no choice but to let go.... We'll use a S7-222 CPU, cross out the ET200 and use the I/O's from the S7-200... So in the end, the TP will be in the S7's MPI network, and the S7 will be the only remote slave... The Prosoft tecnhical support went out of choices... At least we found a workaround! And once again, with a S7-200... About that program to make the TP a DP-slave, we haven't tested it completelly yet. We needed to make a choice about the S7-200, because the panel will be assembled on Monday. But we'll probably still test that, just to see how it works... Once again, thank you INS and J_Bell...
