We have a WinCC Advanced system running on our plant. The system is configured to act as OPC Server. Now we would like to read information (tags) from this system using an OPC client. I've tried a few demo clients

Both clients are able to find the server (probably because of OPCEnum?), but when trying to connect, Softing's demo client gives me a "Class not registered" exception and Siemens OPCUA client (both simple and advanced) fail to connect with the message

"COM/OPC error 0x80004005 on CoCreateInstance()
Error string: Unspecified error

Additional: Could not connect to server 'OPC.SimaticHMI.CoRtHmiRTm.1'"

After some digging I found this log-file, apparently belonging to WinCC OPC server (\ProgramData\Siemens\CoRtHmiRTm\OPC\IVarOPC.err):

I ran the HMI application on a devellopment laptop, where it functions fine. Can anybody help me point in the right direction for a solution?

I had the same problem and couldn't find a solution. A support request solved the issue very fast. Just install the OPC-XML Gateway or SIMATIC NET as described here:
