PILearner Posts: 80 Rating: (1)	Dear All, We are planning on using a ultrasonic transducer Echomax XRS -5 and LUT 400 level controller, for measuring level in a DIESEL Tank, We want to know whether the ultrasonic will work on a DIESEL , as there is a chance of fumes in a tank with a maximum temperature of up to 50 degree C. Levelmans Posts: 124 Rating: (45)	Dear PILearner , youcould get a little drift in thespeed of soundof theultrasonic signal by a diesel temperature of 50 C°, but theLUT400 with XRS-5will work. A radar wavewill not be effected from the kind of atmosphere. For the best performance,I suggest to go fora high frequency radar like theLR250 with 2", 3" or 4" horn. Hope this helps !

PILearner Posts: 80 Rating: (1)	Dear Levelmans, It was mentioned by you that we might a drift. is that because of the fumes that will be generated at a maximum temperature of 50. what will be a favourable temperature range that diesel must be kept at at which any fumes would not be generated? Would 40 or 45 degree C be good enough to over come the phenomenon of drift? By Drift do you mean loss of accuracy? Regards PILEARNER

PILearner Posts: 80 Rating: (1)	Dear levelmans, We had a installed a clamp on ultrasonic flow meter of another manufacturer for flow measurement of DIESEL. But for some reason despite their best efforts , it could not read any flow. Now we have replaced it with a mass flow meter. Could you please tell me why the ulttrasonic could not read the flow of diesel at all. Is it beacuse ultrasonic doesn't perform very well petrochemicals? RegardsPILearner

Levelmans Posts: 124 Rating: (45)	Dear PILearner , It´s hard to calculate the drift in the accuracyat a temp. of 45 /50 C°. The drift will only have a small effect to the result of the measurement. E.g. for aunderground diesel tank, you will have no change in speed of sound because there will be no"outgassing effect" of the dieselin the atmosphere at ambient temperatures. BR Levelmans

On the contrary, Siemens ultrasonic clamp-ons have a strong track record of performance on petrochemicals. In fact, there are 3 different models of the FUH1010 for petrochem oils/fuels: standard volume, precision volume and interface detection, each specifically designed for a specific service and yet another model FUS LDS for leak detection on pipelines. There have been numerous ultrasonic meters introduced in the market in the past decade. I suspect some are designed only for water or glycol in carbon steel pipe because there is a substantial market in building HVAC for just that. Not all companies have several decades of experience in ultrasonic clamp-on technology like Siemens does. Flowmeters designed only for water might well 'miss' the ultrasonic signal shot through another fluid. The sonic signal at the receiving end 'moves' along the pipe as the liquid's sonic velocity changes (due to either chemical or temperature changes). A meter designed solely for water might very well not be positioned properly to capture a signal through diesel fluid. Also, things happen. A clamp-on setup has dozens of points where an incorrect installation or a problem could prevent a flow rate reading. Something like bad connector on an electrical cable or the wrong transducers for the application. If the people involved with that particular brand couldn't tell you why it didn't work, it's impossible to determine after-the -fact from afar.

ItayiLuke Posts: 1 Rating: (0)	We have a FUH1010 flow meter installed on one of facility for measuring diesel flow. it only worked for a short while and it began to show the letter F, which i saw in the manual that it represents a 3 continuous seconds with new data. Is this new data the flow of the diesel? Because the flow is not continuous. Or the flow meter is only used for continuous flow only?
