My 3 year old Dell XPS I7 12MB RAM works just fine. I expect it to be working fine for a few years more. |

So about the same. Memory is more important than processor for these applications. I got the i7 for Autoacad. |

I dont know if you bit the bullet and bought a laptop already but I was an engineering student and I know for a fact that you only need to worry about the graphics card being dedicated since in engineering courses you don't really see models and projects with a huge number of parts after all you are just a student. If you do however, a dedicated card like the 960GTX from NVIDIA seems pretty good and stable for solidworks. Here's a post that you may find useful when deciding on a laptop for engineering it lists the requirements (only) for the kind of projects you do as an undergrad. Let me know if it helps |
