I am about to program my first PLC. 

I am using Siemens S7-1200.

I will be using a VFD, this will need to change speed and start / stop from the PLC. Can it do this via a communications cable, rather than using the Outputs on the PLC? If so, what drives will work like this, only Siemens?

 Hello Chriss,

SIMATIC S7-1200 can be operated as PROFINET controller as well as PROFIBUS master (with CM 1243-5). A SINAMICS G110M or G120 shall be connected as as PROFINET device or as PROFIBUS slave. read this link for more information.

-> Not only siemens drives, if you have another drive you can connect it to s7-1200 only you have to install its GSD file. see this example.

I will use a Bosch Rexroth VFD then, I’m quite familiar with them so it’ll save me time on this project. 

To cintrol speed from the VFD I’d presumably need an analog output from the PLC?

I will buy the PROFINET card for it so I can try it at a later date.

In that case, the Multi-Ethernet option card manual might interest you, if the drive you are planning to use is a EFC 6160 or 5160:

Chapter 5 discusses Profinet, including drive parameters, the download location of the GSDML file for the drive and an example code with a S7 PLC.
