There is a 5 axis machine with rotary table (AB) (see image below). Control is Sinumerik 840D sl.
I would like to know the distance between rotary axes A and B in X direction. Unfortunately we don't have neither documentation nor 3D model of the machine.

Is there a way to read this data from control? 

I am sorry but I don't get how is it possible to define it on site?

I was thinking about reading TC_CARR variables but I am not sure

I assume the machine uses TRAORI for the table. While TC_CARR variables can be used, originally channel data was used for this. Look for TRAFO5 parameters in the 24500 range.

1) Originally I thought transformations aren't possible including TRAORI without setting up TC_CARR variables. If possible can you provide explanation or suggest an article to read about it please?

2) Are these TRAFO5 parameters is helpful in deducing distances between axes? Right now the whole range of $MC_TRAFO5 variables (from 24500 till 24690) is solely consists of 0 and 1. 

3) Also to clear things out on CYCLE800 and TC_CARR, if we try to open swivel data tab (Service - Swivel Data) machine asks to set up both 18088 MN_MM_TOOL_CARRIER and 52200 $MCS_TECHNOLOGY other than zero, and 52212 $MCS_FUNCTION_MASK_TECH Bit0 as 1.

 All 840D documentation is freely available on the Siemens support site.  See section 3.7 in the Transformations manual for info on the generic 5 axis transformation:   https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/us/en/view/109767453  This shows the cross reference of the MD245xx parameters to the corresponding TC_CARR variables.  TRAORI type 72 is used to select TC_CARR as a source of values.

I'm not too familiar with dual rotating table machines, but it appears that the axis of rotation of the A axis is flush with the top of the table, and the axis of rotation of the B axis is in line with the centerline of the spindle.  I expect this is common, and would make the vector distances zero in TRAORI.  I'm guessing the machine is set up such that machine coordinate X0Y0Z0 is at the center of the B table on its surface.

I've never used CYCLE800.  It seems to be intended for manual/shop floor programming, and would just get in the way when using CAM/post processor programming.  Apparently CYCLE800 requires TC_CARR (which was originally intended for orientable tool carriers - right angle heads, for example) so if you want to use it, you do need to allocate memory for TC_CARR variables and make the specified setting parameters.
