I recommend the Siemens SINAMICS entry level training course where they teach you the steps for commissioning Sinamics drives and motors (Drive-Cliq and non-Drive-Clip too).

Does anyone have a clear list of steps on how to conduct a motor identification for the first time? I have never done this before? 

If your using starter: first select stationary tuning measurement

on that screen:

Press [activate measurement]

Then go to the control panel, assume the control priority. depending on the type of drive, the selections there will be different, but try to make it go....

When you first are setting the drive up this is already on. If you have tried already and didn't know to go there, your out of sequence and you will have to get back into motor commissioning mode. P[10] = 3. after completing the process p[10] = 0 ready....
