I work for a training organisation where we use TIA portal for S7-1200s. Also, I have older non-TIA portal generated programs for our S7-300 PLCs.

The training laptop I will be using to generate and modify the S7-300 programs has TIA ver 12 loaded already. This gives me the option of creating programs for the S7-300 but it doesn't recognise the programs I've already got.

I've tried load a new license of Simatic Manager Basic 10.5 (non-TIA portal) to the laptop but it defaults to the TIA portal version already installed.

Does this mean I have to redo all my older programs for the S7-300 to TIA portal ver 12?

could you please show us a list of your installed SW? you find it in "help"-> "installed SW"

there is no Simatic Manager Basic 10.5

What S7-300-projects do you have?

I guess they are made in Step7 classic ( V5.5) and you want to migrate it to TIA, right?

Our older training laptops have TIA Portal 10.5, WinCC Basic 10.5 and Step 7 Basic 10.5. They also have Step 7 Professional 2006 5.4 + SP4 as part of a Siemens FPG. These are the laptops I used generate the S7-300 projects. However when I've tried to use a younger laptop with TIA ver 12 only the files aren't recognised.

I also have a spare license of Simatic Step 7 Basic v10.5. Can I install this onto my younger laptop and run the S7-300 projects?

first you should check which format the s7 300 projects have!

is is s7p files then is a simatic manager V5 project which you can migrate to tia portal so that the complete project is in tia, a open of the old project directly in tia is not possible.

I've tried to open .s7p files using TIA ver 12 but with no success. I believe the TIA software looks for .ap12 projects and there aren't any other option for file extensions that I can see.

Has anyone tried loading the Siemens Simatic Step 7 onto the same computer as the TIA portal version?

You must "Migrate Project" , then you can select the s7p file an tia migrates it to a tia project if the used components in the program are suported in TIA.

I'm becoming more and more confused here. There is an error when I try to migrate a .S7P file into TIA ver 12. It's saying I need to install Step 7 Professional ver 5.4 or 5.5.

I'm trying to use TIA ver 12 to run and edit old S7-300 projects so I didn't need Step 7 Pro 5.4?

no other way in this case. Solution can be ask some friend to migrate your files (can be depended to some HW updates, other requirements to SW installed) but can be solved. Other solution is download and install Step7 v5.x required for migrate, install required Updates and make that for yourself. You can use Step7 for trial period time about +/- month.
