S7-1200 6ES7 214-1HG31-0XB0 v3.0, does not support uploading to PG/PC

DanF5 Experienced Member Joined: 2/17/2009 Last visit: 9/27/2024 Posts: 57 Rating: (2)	Hi. I am having issues with my 6ES7 214-1HG31-0XB0 (S7-1200 1214C DC/DC/RLY) when trying to upload the project. The S7-1200 is running firmware v 3.0.1. When I try to upload the program, I get the message: "The online module 6ES7 214-1HG31-0XB0 V3.0 does not support uploading the PG/PC" I created a project in V13 & downloaded it without any issues, likewise, tried & successfully downloaded a project in V14 (just in case there was an issue with V13). No issues with the download in either V13 or V14. Can somebody please tell me why I cannot upload from this 1200 please. It seems Siemens try to make a step forward with hardware & software, but incidentally take 3 back! Thanks in advance! Attachment S7-1200 Upload issue.JPG (1336 Downloads)

I have pulled the 1200 into my office so I can play with it without any pressure. I am downloading 'test' projects to it, where I am creating a project using V13 SP1, downloading it, then trying to upload it using exactly the same software & laptop. So the first link isn't relevant to this current situation. Likewise, the second link isn't relevant, as the same software version was used to download & attempt an upload. Any further ideas? I can't honestly believe that Siemens would prevent an upload... I have tried a factory reset & a empty project download & still it won't allow the upload. This seems crazy. Does anybody have any further advice?

You can use the Online Access approach to copy the online configuration of your plc to your PC but you cannot upload the PLC hardware configuration using that method. You can see what hardware is there, what part #'s, and their status, but you cannot necessarily upload it. Have you considered upgrading your software as suggested by the 2nd link by Wizard above to support what you want rather than thinking Siemens does more than expect you to keep backups of your projects? 0_Einstein Diamond Expert Joined: 7/7/2010 Last visit: 9/4/2025 Posts: 16057 Rating: (2513)	I do not know what version of hardware / firmware and software/service pack / update of portal allowed uploading of the hardware configuration, but it was very late in the development (version) of portal. If you cannot upload the hardware configuration, you can review the devices using the online access and dig into the hardware that way. You will have to look at the I/O and "guess" some of the non-default values. If the clock / system memory is used, you can use the tag table to find that. You can then configure the hardware to match. For the network address, you already know that because the discovery protocol gave you that. For the modules, you can see them with your eyes when you look at the I/O, but with the online access, you may be able to detect a little more about the configuration if there are errors, or if you can force errors by disconnecting things that may or may not have wire-break detection enabled. If there is a hardware interrupt OB, you can see what hardware triggers are present that have logic associated for handling it. It can be a pain in the backside if you want a perfect replica of the system. Having the tag table and logic, you can determine quite a bit. I believe you can upgrade the plc to firmware 3.1 and then upload the hardware. Then downgrade to 3.0 and reload the software (after a factory reset). But, you will have the hardware configuration and can rebuild it. DanF5 Yes, I did read the information in both links provided. Was wondering if the OP ever found a solution? We recently acquired a new used machine off the surplus market. there are two sections to the machine, each with its own PLC/HMI and connected to each other through a router. The PLCs are Siemens S7-1200, which of course I have absolutely no experience with. I little research told me I needed Simatic Step 7 as programming software, so I bought a single license copy of TIA Portal Ver15.1 My only goal at this point would be to upload the programs from the PLC's for my archives (as I typically do when we get something new), and of course learn a new technology. After getting online with TIA Portal V15.1, I was able to get the following information from the PLC's; PLC_1 Short Description) CPU 1214C DC/DC/DC Article Number) 6ES7 214-1AG40-0XB0 Hardware) 1 Firmware) V4.0.0 TIA Portal) V13.0 (this is the one that gives me the compatibility error) PLC_2 Short Description) CPU 1214C DC/DC/DC Article Number) 6ES7 214-1AG31-0XB0 Hardware) 2 Firmware) V3.0.2 TIA Portal) V13.0 SP1 (this is the one that says it does not support PG/PC) Which lead me down the path of downloading TIA Portal V13 SP1 which I believed would get me where I wanted to go... So in V13 SP1 I created a new project, selected my PLC_1 from the online list, and did the Upload Device as a New Station... Only to be given the following error; "The hardware configuration was created and downloaded with an incompatible version of STEP7. Could not upload hardware configuration." I've researched this one and keep getting lead down a path that I need to use "Compatibility Mode V13". The Help section talks about "Compatibility Mode", but doesn't give any real info how to use it... I went through the same steps with PLC_2, and this is where it says it does not support PG/PC... And after reading this post, I get the feeling that it has to do with the Firmware V3.0.2, and I need to update it to V3.1. But being a complete *** with Siemens, I want to make sure I fully understand this process (bear in mind, I've been working with PLC's for 25 years, and I've had my share of catastrophe's), I certainly don't want to crash a CPU or lose the program I'm trying to upload. I see there is also a function to "Backup from online device", which I assume would at least get me a copy that I can dump back in if needed, but would not be something that I could open in Step 7 and go online with. Can anyone point me to good instructions for either of my issues? Regards, JohnR

0_Einstein Diamond Expert Joined: 7/7/2010 Last visit: 9/4/2025 Posts: 16057 Rating: (2513)	Depending on the PLC's firmware revision, getting a complete backup you can look at in TIA Portal is not too difficult. For earlier firmware, hardware backups are not possible. For very early firmware, backups are not possible at all, but it is possible to recover blocks and tags using the "online access" portion of the project tree. It has been asked about so much, there are FAQs about recovering project data from s7-1200's. Those FAQs will provide much more information than you will get from the forums, and you won't have to wait for someone to tell you the answer. FYI, your V15.1 license allows you to install every prior version of TIA Portal and use the V15.1 license to operate it. Be sure and check the installation requirements before installing any version of TIA Portal before v15.1. It might surprise you, and it might even upset you.

After auto detection, i went online and uploaded software only with no problems. There was two issues i couldn't do it first time. First my TIA was V13.1 so I used another machine with V13.0 Second while selecting unspecified PLC i didn't change version from V4.1 to V3.0. I hope this may help.

If the CPU version is 3.0.2, set it to 3. Detect Hardware:Click the "Detect" button to load all hardware. Upload from PLC:In the project tree, right-click on the PLC and select the "Upload" option. Archive Project:Once the upload is complete, you can archive the project.
