In my opinion, the first step on the way to an ideal solution is to write down your requirements in some text and maybe mockups, and then look for an approach that meets those requirements. I'm sure you'll be happy to get help here in the forum, but I'm afraid I can't give you any more information with your current question wording.

Using faceplates would be the way to do this. You may want to take a look at the Library of Basic Controls (LBC).
