We have a project proposal to implement a high speed timestamping supported DI and DO system for an Oil and Gas project, for reporting into Sequence of event logging (SOE/SER) software.

➡️ As I checked the high precision timestamping only supported in PCS7 system with ET200SP HA, I would like to know if anybody have information about using high precision timestamping in s7-1500 CPU specifically s7-1500H.

Our current selected config:

This is a high powered CPU!  instructions can take as little as 1ns.

When programing a flame controller, one fault often leads to another. So recording the "First Out" is often implemented. The time stamp you record in the PLC (the fastest way). will be accurate to 1ms, but the time it takes to run the program will ultimately decide how often the PLC checks the Input in question.

And the DI module I have shared above also supported it, it is a property of hardware to include a timestamp measure when a change of input signal.

S7-1500's support Profinet ISO/IRT communications.  When coupled with ISO compatible remote IO processors and ISO compatible I/O modules, you can get time synchronized I/O.

It can be accomplished by using a cyclic interrupt OB that calls SYNC_PI, and then in your situation log the data, or prepare it for sending and assigning a timestamp for when the input data was captured, and handling synchronous outputs (like coordinated motion - aka, robot - VFD drives axes).  Once the synchronous outputs are "solved", lastly call SYNC_PO and store their timestamp for sending to the SOE/SER system outside the PLC.

You can go as fast as ~4000 Hz with an S7-1518.

With S7-1517, you can get ~2000 Hz with ISO, more with IRT (without ISO) but with less repeated precision.

Think of ISO(over IRT) vs IRT (without ISO) like this:

ISO : precise time close like a metronome, maxing out around 4-5kHz
IRT : precise time with a bit more difference between data captures, maxing out around 4-5kHz but you lose the reality of the timestamps.

Reason: For ISO modules / processors / Profinet comms configuration, all the inputs are accepted at the exact same time (no I/O multiplexing), transmitted all together, and available to the SYNC_PI call from a precise and repeatable cyclic interrupt OB (OB3x).

For IRT, you are essentially polling any non-ISO configured / enabled I/O. 

Depending on the actual hardware, you can get precise time-stamping.  However, the actual measurement (or data input capture of the A/D signals point in time) is not in reality related directly with the time-stamp of the success (from SYNC_PI's output RTN_VAL) of any SYNC_PI call in OB3x.

Note you may be able to get higher throughput using Profibus cranked up to 12Mbps, or using Ethercat, but that will introduce time variation unless you built around the Ethercat's version of Profinet's ISO/IRT communications deterministic methods through ISO compatible hardware.

All that said, if you know what tolerance is allowed between time-stamped data, you can determine whether you can use remote I/O ISO modules at the lowest capabilities (HS modules), or require both High Speed AND High Function modules (HF modules).

NOTE: S7-1500 Local I/O in ISO mode is updated no faster than 1ms regardless of the rest of the ISO configuration.  That local I/O time-stamping will all be interrelated and all the inputs will be captured at precise same 1ms point in time.

I really recommend reading up on ISO communications with the S7-1500's.  Download a functional ISO configured sample project from this support site so you can see what a properly configured and utilized ISO system looks like.

You may find that S7-1518 is too expensive, or that the HF modules are too expensive.

It really depends on the required precision of the moment in time ALL the inputs are captured, or if you simply need to know sometime within the last xxx.xxxxxxx msec, these inputs were captured, and these outputs / values were sent out to the hardware modules and eventually actualized in hardware and presented to all the output devices wiring.

If this sounds like I'm talking in circles, please read up on ISO comms and how it is different from IRT, and further, how IRT is different than regular (standard) Profinet (non IRT/ISO).

S7-1518 is preferred because you can have 2 PLC controls networks, one PN ISOchronous, and the other could be PN IRT and/or standard PN.  The 3rd network adapter can then be connected directly to a supervisory PC (or PLC) where time-stamped event data can be forwarded very quickly over a 1Gbps link.  There is no 1Gbps link required for PN/ISO, PN/IRT, PN - at least not as far as I've heard.  I know 3 years ago that was indeed the case.

In addition: from my experience ET200SP HA is not compatible with S7-1500 but with S7-400 only.
