korazy Posts: 10 Rating: (1)	I am new to Siemens automation and new to PLC devices. I have some basic questions to ask. I have: Siemens CPU 1212C AC/DC/RLY 6ES7 212-1BD30-0XB0 Siemens SM1223 DC/RLY 6ES7 223-1PL30-0XB0 Siemens KTP1000 BASIC PN 6AV6 647-0AF11-3AX0 INCREMENTAL ROTARY, ENCODER TRD-160-RZWD When I connect the SM1223 to the CPU 1212C, the error light blinks red on the CPU 1212C and the diag light blinks red on the SM1223. What is the proper way to connect them? Where can I find good resources (tutorials?) on connecting the KTP1000 display with the CPU 1212C. Looking for basics, user will enter values (basic dimensions, width height depth) into the display, the display will pass the values to the CPU and start a program. How do I connect the incremental rotory to the CPU inputs? link to documentation? Thanks in advance.

What is the proper way to connect them? That's because your SM1223 isn't powered with 24V. The "backplane" connector is only for communication, not power. Have a look at the starter guides for proper wiring.

korazy Posts: 10 Rating: (1)	The biggest thing with my original quetions, was I had no expereince with the Siemens software and hardware, or automation programming at all and I had 4 days to get my project done. Error light when connecting the SM1223 to CPU 1212C. I don't know for sure, but I expect that went away when I updated the CPU device configuration. To recognize the add-on. Resources for HMI. I went through the HMI basic panels getting started guide. The biggest help I found there was I originally started with two seperate projects. Display project in WinCC software and PLC project in TIA Portal. Once I realized I could have my HMI programming done in the same project in TIA Portal, I had drop downs to choose my HMI tag mapping to PLC tag mapping. For connecting the rotary, I needed a jumper between the CPU ground and the CPU inputs common ground to make it work. without the input ground, the encoder signals just would not be read reliably using high speed counter.
