Styleguide auto numbering

sunday_robin Joined: 5/30/2023 Last visit: 11/14/2024 Posts: 40 Rating: (1)	Hi, I was reading the Programming Styleguide for Simatic S7-1200 / S7-1500 and noticed the following: "DA003 Rule: Set/evaluate block properties. The following settings must be activated in the block properties: • Auto-numbering: Blocks (OB, FC, FB, DB, TO) shall only be delivered with auto-numbering turned on. Be aware that the execution of an Organization blocks depends on its number/priority." I cannot understand why this is better for standardization than grouping the blocks by different ranges, e.g., communication blocks starting at DB200, motor and valves FB 500, and so on. The auto numbering is there to help you. When you copy a code block from one project to the next, auto numbering will have the block choose its own number. Manual numbered blocks attempts to keep its original number. The slight exception comes when copying from the library. Personally I want to have the block that functionally fit together, to be in a set address range. It has organizational purpose. It is a time waste to keep this concept to change each address each time a structure change happens. It is a legacy habit that is hard to let go of. Use auto numbering to save time and effort. Avoid arranging (rearranging and rearranging again) the block numbers,

The programmer has the symbolic name and comment available to make his organizational choices; the rest is the compiler's problem. It was a mistake to make them available originally with their calling or opening instructions!

It would be nice to be able to create blocks without needing to open a dialog first. "Create FB" and "Create FC" options (with hotkeys) that works like "New Folder" in Windows explorer would be real nice. Maybe that could be on the "overview" page. Legacy is to blame for the situation. The S7-300 and S7-400 still needed to be accommodated. The auto block numbering is the default which already discourage using manual numbering. Unique symbol names that are descriptive and also points to functional modules becomes long and cumbersome. Only now with Step7 V18 (moreso with V19) is Siemens pushing naming scopes that enhances symbolic naming. Grouping functionalities is now more easily. The catch is that only the S7-1500 sees this enhancements. Being blind to block numbers makes 100% sense for the latest iteration of the S7-1500 design. The S7-1200 is associated with 'small' installations. Software units are not part of the S7-1200's functional scope. In my opinion, the absolute address of the block is still instrumental in organization. Productivity does however take a knock. Being able to change addresses directly from "overview" page would be real nice for us who use absolute addresses for organization.

enof Silver Member Joined: 2/10/2012 Last visit: 10/30/2024 Posts: 314 Rating: (59)	Numbering of OB's define the sequence of processing, lowest first. So they are needed somehow and it's not defined by symbolc names unless it's lexicographical which it isn't. Somebody forgot it?

Ecoleaf Member Joined: 4/22/2021 Last visit: 10/29/2024 Posts: 18 Rating: (1)	Hi all To be honest, block numbering it is an absolute pain in the ass for the folks we are coming from many years back to Simotion (being fully used to only write text for all) Provably by this reason, and having this ancient mind already, block numbering it is a way to have some order into program. In fact while configuring safety administration a block range for automatic block numbering it is to be defined. In any case, nowadays, seems block numbers tends to be useless or to originate confusion in the way they are implemented. Besides folders that groups things perfectly, specially nowadays with such amount of libraries available, would be good to fully disappear it,or instead to be possible to have a "default" block range per folder or the possibility to select and re-number blocks into a range, as for S7 or S5 nostalgics like me before Simotion, will help to keep things into order.
