der Stefan Posts: 2 Rating: (0)	Despite your good explanation in the provided document I still have a question: Is collision on a Modbus/TCP network possible? The fact that it uses master/slave topology tells me it's a deterministic network, but on the other hand, it a layer on top of ethernet and tcp/ip; which is a indeterministic network.

Hello The Modbus/TCP may share the TCP network with many other devices and protocols which can result in the possibility of a collision. However there is nothing to worry as TCP networks usemedia access control protocol for Ethernet LANs called CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Media Access/Collision Detection). With this the collissions can be detected and franes can be re-transmitted. Hope this helps Cheers Navnag

Scott Bronze Member Joined: 10/23/2005 Last visit: 3/31/2020 Posts: 81 Rating: (9)	I want to first to applaud Siemens for finally realizing Modbus is an important Communications protocol to have in a PLC and new TIA portal. So with that being said why did Siemens program the block literally from specification that was written 40 plus years ago. If I could make a slight suggestion. This would be on the Slave or Client only. This forces a limitation of Fuction 3 to read and write everything in holding registers. Make it flexible to where Bools (Function 1, 2, 5, 15) can beread or written too a data block of bools. This has been done before in other Siemens products but I guess that is the down fall of such a big company. Divisions don't cross borders. Lessons learned, collaboration,Focus group of what might be important.This kind of lack of detail actually runs throughout TIA portal. Just the little things that make a product ok, to make it great and really save time in development.

So, I have produced this General Description document for the Modbus Protocol. This is a generic guide to the modbus protocol and is not intended as a replacement for the specific Modbus driver manuals supplied from IIA. This is really useful when I have been experience associated with Modbus_RTU either the Master or Slave by RS485 communication. I am really appreciated if I can be made sense of modbus_RTU method in order to ensure the required applicable requirements such as function code, slave address aand the other mapping address of modbus registers. Thank very much for your cooperation that can be used to determine idoit-proof from my concerned to be connected to third-party of devices without any troubles. Have a good day.
