I found and downloaded three (compressed) files, from this site, that should have delivered firmware ver. 4.2 for my Step 7 systems.  The three files must have originally been located on CDs.  Can't extract the firmware .

 Sorry, but this is one of those questions, only lead to more questions.

Which files (screenshot, links)?  What would you like to achieve at all?

Because:

Is guess the three compressed files you are mentioned, are a firmware update for the CPU itself, not for STEP 7. But as you wrote something with "CDs" and "Step 7 systems" i guess you simply would like to integrate a newer firmware to the hw catalog of your Step 7/TIA.
This would be a totally different story and other files (HSPs / Hardware Support Packages) would be necessary, which are not available for CPUs as the firmware version of CPUs available in hw config is bound to a specific version of STEP 7.
