I know this is a stupid question, but...

I'm planning to use Heidenhain linear encoder with 1Vss signal for some measurements and I need to get the readings to a Simatic controller. Haven't decided on the controller yet but I'm not sure if I can plug this in analog outputs or do I need some special modem for this? Maybe same as for potentiometer? I was googling this but all I seemed to find was Drives for el. motors.

Encoders cone in 2 types: incremental or absolute.

Incremental encoders provide pulses that the PLC can read with a HSC (high-speed counter), configured with the correct parameters that match the encoder configuration.

An absolute encoder often uses an SSI connection, and produces a (changing) number that the PLC will read as the actual position. To do so you neen either a special input module that accepts SSI connections, or a fieldbus (Profibus-DP for example) interface between the encoder and the CPU.

To answer your question precisely, we need to know what model of Heidenhain encoder you will be using, and eventually the type of PLC selected for your project.

Since you have posted this in the "Sinumerik" forum.

I would expect that you are to use a Sinumerik control?

For a 1VSS Heidenhain linear encoder, you would need a SMC20 unit to interpret the signal to the NC via Profinet - SMC20 - Link 

You can also use the SMC family of unit as an external encoder setup in TIA Portal for the S7 family of PLC's but that is a different story
