Question between hardware & software

I'm new programming s7-200, i've done 2 little projcts but now i need to retofiting an cutting paper machine and i want to use one HSC with an rotary encoder to measure the distance. I've study the manual. So this is the question, i use one input clock (I0.0), one input direction (I0.1), one input reset (I0.2), by the manual i can use the HSC0 with mode 4, my dificult is understanding the example i the manual because they not refer the phisic inputs on example program. Can anyone help me, Thank you in advance! Joca
