Are Timers in S7-1200/1500 used just in DBs?

in S7-300/400 it is possible to define a timer independent of DB.

Hello.

There are hardware timers and software timers. The hardware timers use addresses like %T0 while software timers are linked directly / indirectly to data blocks.

The S7-1200 only has software timers while the others have both types.
Step7 in TIA it is easy to see these timers:


In Step7 Classic the software timers (IEC-timers) are hidden in the instruction libraries. I recommend you look at all the different timers available in Step7 (TIA) and read the HELP on each instruction.

When using a software timers you have 2 options -
1. Link the timer to a global DB (single instance)
2. Link the timer to STAT inside the FB (multi instance).
