Can I send a txt string from a PC to a S7 300 PLC

Chaddy Posts: 8 Rating: (0)	Hi, I have an application where i need to send and receive txt strings over an Ethernet network to and from a PC to a PLC. I have a S7 317-2 DP CPU along with a CP 343-1 Lean Ethernet card. Could a use a simple program like HyperTerminal, using the TCP/IP Winsock do?? If so what port number would I set for the S7? Also what would be the requirements’ in the PLC software to (listen) for the txt, recv blocks and send blocks etc Any examples or help would be greatly appreciated. Yours Mark

Define a TCP/IP or UDP connection in your PLC (NetPro) to "other station". Now NetPro will show you the port-number. UDP is probably best choice sinceit isa low levelprotocol (simple structure) and it doesn't need a reply/acknowledge msg. Try to send something from the PLC to the PC using AG_SEND and check if something arrives in Hyperterminal. good luck René

Chaddy Posts: 8 Rating: (0)	Thanks for the reply, I tried what you suggested but I only can see the S7 subnet ID 0017-0010 when setting the connection. Maybe I need to look at an OPC application type setup on the PC?? Mark

Look at address tab for the portnumber. See attached image of NetPro, it works the same if you use UDP. It seems the port number is by default set at 2000 for the 1st connection. Chaddy Posts: 8 Rating: (0)	I have set up the UDP connection along with the AG_SEND function, all is well. PLC happy at sending a 10byte string, getting the done with no errors bit. Sending to ip address and port 2000 Just can not seem to set up HyperTerminal, can only set "Connect Using" TCP/IP winsock? other than coms ports. It will not connect using the TCP/IP but will listen for a connection, but I don’t think this is correct, nothing comes in. I have disabled any firewalls etc. Any ideas? Another application maybe?

There are a lot of ways to send/receive datatoa PLC (likethe OPC you mentioned). But then you need another program as interface to communicate with the OPC server... The choicedepends on what you use it for, i assumed you wanted a low cost way to send/receive a string to the PLC since you tried HyperTerminal. May be a google-search can bring you a simple Visual Basic or Cprogram that handles some UPD-communications as an example and then create a small program with VB/C yourself. A program like Ethereal can help to debug the ethernet communications (www.ethereal.com) good luck!
