The best way I can suggest for you to wnaswer your own questions about Siemens safetyengineering would be to invite you to look at the following manual, Chapter 6, "Achievable Safety classes with F-I/O". http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/12490443 For intrinsically-safe signal modules available from Siemens, this manual is very comprehensive: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/19026151 For explosion-proof (Ex I/O) modules, look at the following info: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/1096709 I do not have an answer about the consequence on SIL certification of using safety barriers with failsafe I/O modules. Maybe someone else from the forumwho has designed such a system can add something from his own experience? Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier |

Hello, Siemens AS & I/O are SIL3 cerified and you have to respect some rules as well as d_chartier said. here a link with an explanation about SIL3 application http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/12490437 look chapter 7.5.7 & 7.5.8. Introducing new component in loop like barrier SIL computing will be affect for sure, but too difficult to say how much; depends fhow many % of them on total I/O to be certified. Anyway I'm not able to do an exact computing, have to ask to SIL expert certification. I hope can help a lil Regards |

Hello all SIL level is calculated for each SIL Loop. In a S7-400 F/FH you can have standard loops and SIL Loops (their function is only shutdown the plant). See http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/12490443. If you have a SIL Loop like Fig 5-11 for example and you have also a corresponding output diagram and reliable Transmiters, you can get SIL3. There are SIL 3 , EX transmiters in the market, but you can have all together and not achieve SIL 3. You need to know the values of your components like in table 4-3 and there is a Formula to calculate and you have to get a better value than Table 4-2 (SIL3). This calculation maybe you can do by yourself but there are companies that can help like http://www.exida.com/ Regards Mario |
