315-2DP as DP Slave

hkryan802 Posts: 2 Rating: (0)	Dear All, I would like to config a lot of 315-2DP as DP slave for ABB DCS communication, but when I check the siemens catalogue I find out an item I don't understand. The catalogue say when CPU 315-2DP x2 as DP slave, the number of connections are 16 (attached file). What is the meaning? Does it mean I can't config over 16 slave CPUs in a same network? Darius Platinum Member Joined: 9/28/2005 Last visit: 8/22/2023 Posts: 2957 Rating: (242)	Hi, That means that if this PLC is in DP slave mode it can be configured up to 16 connections in NetPro configuration system. So generally speaking it can make 16 connections to the masters. In your case you don't need to worry about this parameter. It just can't communicate to more than 16 other devices at the same time.

Here you configure connections if you need to communicate this PLC by SFC with another device. If it is used only as a slave with a GSD file on master, it still takes connection resource even if this connection is not configured in NetPro.

If slave is communicated by a master by means of GSD file then no need for NetPro, but even in this case communication resource is taken. There is no possibility that you communicate to anythig by profibus by not taking any resources. For short - NetPro is when you use SFCs for communication. If you use only GSD coomunication then no need for NetPro, but communication resource is still taken.

fritz Diamond Expert Joined: 10/7/2005 Last visit: 9/22/2023 Posts: 2987 Rating: (1033)	Dear all allow me fristly to put the discussion about connection resources to rest: PROFIBUS DP communication in a master-slave system does NOT use connection resources Secondly, do not get confused by thethe "number of connections = 16" statement insidethe "DP Slave" section dear hkryan802. This means that if that particular interface is used as a Profibus DP Slave port,it will still support a maximum of 16 other "connection resource consuming" connections (e.g. SCADA system, HMI's, S7 online programming, S7 communicationsas a Server etc.). Note that these 16 connections do count towards the overallmaximum of connections that the CPU as a whole supports (which would be "only"16 in the case of a 315). I hope this helps
