Barcode Scanner Help

Hi,

I need to achieve the following.

Using an S7-1200 CPU with an a RS232 barcode scanner I'd like to be able to scan a barcode then record that as the master barcode (by means of a button press, possibly HMI). Unless this barcode is scanned again a particular output wont activated. The operator can update the master barcode at anytime through the HMI menu.

So I need to store this barcode and compare it to future scans.

Is this possible without the use of a PC. I've achieved this using an arduino with a USB shield but now I need to migrate to a PLC.

 I think you need a RS232 module for S7-1200 (CM1241) i guess. After that connecting the Barcode scanner and if you can get the inputs, then itsi simple comparator programming to achieve your desired result. If you can establish RS232 communication, others won't be a big thing.

Hello,

another solution can be use CPU Profinet port configured with TCP programmed connection and via suitable general TCP to Serial Gateway (Moxa f.ex.) you can use TCP to serial conversion. Serial Gateway can act as Server and you can use same comm system like you communicate with serial scanner but via Ethernet medium.

So I'm I right in assuming as long as I can setup and receive a packet from the scanner its just a case on converting it from ASCII to HEX then comparing the saved master to future scans? is it that simple. 

 Yes, as far as I know that must be straight. You should give a try first and see how it goes.

P.S will update here with my findings/solutions.

Hello,

I recommend use PC app for test (everytime used this solution prior PLC programming). That serial PC app can easy receive frame from Scanner after triger scan. Then you can deep investigate incomming frame and compare with documentation of scanner to be in problematic. Good SW are free f.ex. Hercules or basiv Hyperterminal but be carefuly about control chars to be enabled to show, better in hex format.

Im taking delivery of a KP400 HMI soon, I see it comes with a USB for keyboards,can this USB also be used for a usb barcode scanner. i.e USB HID keyboard/barcode scanner? It will save money on purchasing an RS232 Module and USB is a cheaper scanner.
