Starting from S7-300 it was quite easy for me to adopt the S7-1200. Maybe more difficult if you come from the S7-200 environment. I have finished my first operational project with it using PID and Open TCP and HMI, no issues. I some times miss the STL capability but was able to use the built in math functions in ladder effectively. I'd rather wait for a good SCL implementation on the S7-1200 than getting 'old fashioned' STL... However, if you need Profinet/Profibus based devices you need to wait for a while... Hi Hans, Speaking about a possitive programmer... I had also some trouble when I started the first time, I had a lot of experience with STEP7 from V1.0 until V5.5 . That was the first time not easy until I noticed that the screens that around the editor screen where for the choosen editor. SCL is coming in V11 I have seen on the SCS in Nurenberg. Also the possibilitys for PROFINET are with V2 of the Firmware possible (you will need the new version ofSTEP7 BASIC V11 to program it), it is a controller for 8 devices. Also a PROFIBUS Master and a PROFIBUS Slave module (CP) are coming with the next version (V11, FW2).

Late Platinum Member Joined: 1/7/2006 Last visit: 3/9/2025 Posts: 2705 Rating: (321)	Dear Andreas, After your issues the answers. there is no undo button --> V11 have it there is no possibility to back up the data blocks (loss of changed process data), every time on download the process valuesare overwritten with thevalues declared in the datablock --> Snapshot in V11 sometimes with the mouse pointer on acommand field and using the mouse scoll button to scroll the pages up and down, thecommand field changesi.e. from R(reset) to S(set) and others -->what is the resolution you are using? there is no way to download only the modified FC, FB, OB, DB - allways questions on download (not to disable) - plc stop - check before downloading - download - etc., after compiling a program and there are no changes the software compiles again before download --> V11 SP1 needs a lot of time- until 3 minutes - tocompletea download of a25k program to the PLC tho change i.e. only one parameter who doesnt be accessible with the HMI, need to do the whole mashine process again who cost a lot of time. (i.e initial position,process etc. until to arrive where the changes was made to see if everyting is ok) --> Improved in V11 in online status in the block - click on a variablei.e.to copy - stops the online monitoring, need to download again to continue the monitoring, same with offline editing, need to download first before can start monitoring, nothing was changed in the program! --> Some timestamping.... doesnt accept a valid HW configs --> Which one not, I have also loaded different modules into the S7-1200 don´t have access via plc - software/hmi to the PID parameters to change the parameters --> Do you mean from the display it self? there is no way to copy datablocks with different declaratios inside the datablock at once --> in V11 possible there is no indirect adressing --> in V11 is slice technology and the AT command theres no STL --> SCL will be there in V11, STL is an old fassioned language, I have worked for 23 year with it, but it is not from this time anymore this is very insatisfied for me and my clients to loss a lot of time for programming and start-up on equipment with s7-1200--> From which planet are you... land back on mother earthplease

For some time in different devices (control processes) when PLC out relay goes off also whole PLC turn off or from time to time even turn to error mode. To output is connceted siemens contacor 5,5kW. There was no such problem with S7-200 even I turned off many more contacotrs.

I have had days where the virtual memory pop-up would appear every 5 to 10 minutes. Eventually it would pop up within a minute of clicking ok. I would reboot and it would last a few hours before it came back. Virtual memory management in TIA Portal 10.5 SP2 is not that great. Like abe, I had plenty of memory available and still received these messages. I have seen some odd things happen with hardware configthat magically fix themselves by removing everything, and simply putting it back in a different order, and then manually configuring the modules once the devices were all placed into the device view/layout. I have filled up my S7-1214C PLC working memory several times despite having plenty of available memory. Having the ability to specify memory allocation would fix that problem and allow us to fully utilize all available I/O and comm module slots without worrying we will run out of working memory. I was asked by peers and managers whether in retrospect if the S7-1200 was the right choice for the job, I had to say, probably not as much time was wasted trying to solve PLC problems and not enough time to solve customer problems. We basically had to stop implementation because we could not squeeze in all the functionality the customer wanted. So, if you are trying to do 3 or 4 things, the S7-1200 is great. If you are doing 30 or 40 things, maybe even a little RS485 network communications, perhaps it isn't the right tool.

It seems the "Future of Engineering" will include STL after all (and so it shouldin my humble opinion). Dear fritz, The TIA portal V11 will be available in different versions. (Like standard, professional etc.) The STL language will only be possible in combination with S7-300 and S7-400. With the S7-1200 it will not . And yes, I agree it should be nice to have it also for S7-1200. (maybe I'm old fashioned ) Best regards, Wizard

But it will be furthermore available with S7-300/400, as wizard already said. You have to make differences between low-cost and high-end equipment. S7-1200 should only be the low-cost, so you have to lower one's sights. Because it is a completelly new system und has nothing to do with S7-200 or 300/400, the decision was made to get away from STL. The old machine language STL does not match with the new and fresh PLC. But, the new SCL-editor will be much better as the SCL in Step7 v5.5. So, the trend goes to standard programming language. I know, SCL is not the newest one but it's enough to programm industrial controller. If you want more, you have to take a PC-based system. It always depends on what customer wants to do and what are the requirements. So, abe01, if your clients uses STL at this time and programs complex things, then they use minimum an S7-300. A S7-1200 wouldn't make sense.If they don't want to learn SCL or don't chum with graphical programming, I think it is the best way to hold on to that what they have. Also the new TIA platform is not everybodies favorite and it needs time to get along with this. But this isthe problem with every new thinks. Look at Windows Vista and Windows 7. It also needs time to develop a good working software with all available functionalities. Have a look at your PLC-programs. I don'tthinks that they runs perfect always in first version. So, I ensure you, with v11 many many bugs will be repaired and most of the wishes will be included. TIA is the future and earlier or later most of the people will switch over to new platform, if not they can hold on the classic software. There is no need to follow the trend. But before to complain that everythink is bad and not running, give Siemens the chance to fix it give yourself the change to test it extensively. So I pleading you coming back to the topic of this thread and lets find maybe new bugs in v11. I believe you'll have difficulties to find some best regards robster

I believe you'll have difficulties to find some best regards robster No disrespect intended to you or Siemens, but there are bugs in virtually every piece of software. Sometimes the bugs are useful so they put them into the help file as new features and market them. Sometimes the bugs are because of bugs in the hardware so the software can never fix them. Sometimes bugs are because the devices are used in harsher environments than specifications allow. Regardless of what causes the bugs, I am sure I'llfind at least one within a week of having V11.

Yesterday I spoke to the Hot-line and tell me that would leave a new version (V11) but there is still no date! Response that left me more uncertainty than you had before.I mention that: -does not have the command Undo, Undo, Ctrl-Z or whatever you want call, an error acidental and there is no turning back -does not have indirect address ( Sp2 with instructions " Read Field and "Write Field" which is a patch to have something like that above have to put a hand because it does not appear on the menu of instructions , (go to migrate a prog of S7200 jah !) -not can modify online a block of program !, so there are to compile and reload all the OBs FCs bsf and DBs -not can recharge a program without overwrite the data (DBs) and there is no way that does not do so ! -The program is unstable, each both pasted a hang up -"and perlite": "has no Profinet", is pure verse !, is not yet implemented ( response i received yesterday in the hot-line of Siemens), This is ethernet tcp that is neither by shadow the same. Means that we can involve anything profinet to this PLC yet. The only thing that you will connect are their own products of Siemens S7-1200 , is as buy a cell phone that only allows you to talk to another cell of the same mark & model! The new line of PLCs Siemens S7-1200 , by now the only new that brings, are the problems ! Horacio ( Scheduling the following products Siemens since 1993 : S5 Logo! S7-S7 200-300 and S7-400, Protool, Wincc, Drive Is Basic, Somotion Scout .. and now TIA V10.5 , evil that i despite.........)
