Contruction wise difference of DC motor & DC generator

Hello Chetan2490 Practically every DC Motor can also be used as a Generator. Here is a very simplified description : Basically, if you excite the DC Motor Field and apply Voltage to its Armature, it will start rotating as a motor ( and also rotate the load copupled to it ), The Speed is proportional to the Armature Voltage upto Base Speed and thereafter if the Motor is designed for field weakening then you can increase the speed further by reducing the field current ( This is however not a linear but a Parabolic type of charactristic. ). On the other hand, if you if you excite the Fieldand couple the same motor to a prime mover ( an engine, turbine, a mechanical flywheelor another motor ), then it will act as a generator. Armature voltage will be proportional to the speed at which it is being rotated. Hope this helps Cheers Navnag

There are DC Motors with Series Field for High initial torque applications ( e.g. Traction Motors ), but you would probably never find a DC Generator with Series field ( Except for Re-generative Braking ) 2. DC Generators will almost always be Permanent Magnet ( Small motors ) or Seperately excited. while DC Motors may also be self excited. 3. DC Motors may be designed for field weakening, but not DC Generators. Hope this helps Cheers Navnag

Dear chetan, As per my knowledge their is no any difference in construction of DC motor & DC generator,Bcoz we can use DC motro as Generator and vice versa.Their is a difference in just what you given as input.If u give electrical input than it works as motor on the other way if give mechanical input its work as generator.
