CPU characteristics. Some questions.

Could someone shed the light on the following things I'm interested in?

 As an example:

SIMATIC S7-1500, CPU 1511-1 PN, Central processing unit with Work memory 150 KB for program and 1 MB for data, 1st interface: PROFINET IRT with 2-port switch, 60 ns bit performance, SIMATIC Memory Card required

 What does that mean?

1st interface: PROFINET IRT with 2-port switch

 First interface? So, where's second one?

2-port switch? Does that mean two rj-45 sockets? Does that mean availability of two fully capable profinet ports onboard?

A google search of your "CPU 1511-1 PN" took me to the industry mall, and CAD images of the module.

The highest end 1500 PLC has 3 distinct interfaces, 2 of which have 2-port switches, for a total of 5 network ports, just not on the same subnets.

1511 still not mine. That's an example. I think I will need 1516 with two PN or so. Just for S7-300 everything was clear. 2PN meant two full capable Profinet ports (rj-45). Now there's such  weird descriptions of that. So, I'm asking...

I'm currently looking into ways of replacing old good s7-300...

All the current S7-1215/S7-1217 and all S7-1500 PLCs offer at least 2 RJ45 profinet ports on the "1st interface".  On 1500's, some have a 2nd or even a 3rd interface.  For the 2nd & 3rd interfaces, 1 RJ45 jack per interface.

Makes daisy-chaining profinet much simpler when 2 jacks are present..

That works on 1st interface for every s7-1500 PLC.

You would need an external profinet switch if you wanted to use profinet interface #2 where the PLC is in the middle of your profinet daisy chain.

Interface #1 could be for the PLC & PC.  Interface #2 could be for your proxy.  This would allow better security if you so desired.  F1-Help your TIA Portal after dropping in your PLC about the many ways you can configure your 2 profinet ports (on the -1516).

Then you can decide exactly which port(s) are required.

I think it best if you open up TIA Portal, drop in the PLC you think is sufficient for your needs, and then start configuring the main PLC's many options.

We replaced 314/315-2PN/DP cpu's with ET200SP 1510-F PN cpu's. If we had a 317, now it wouöd be a ET200SP 1512 cpu. These ET200SP cpu's only have one RJ45 port as a standard, but can be expanded to +2 ports, so the total port amoun would be 3 x RJ45. To ad the extra 2 ports, you need a BusAdapter BA 2xRJ45, 6ES7 193-6AR00-0AA0.

We didn't find any need to use the full size 1500 series cpu's for our machinery. The price of a ET200SP cpu is very affordable compared a full size 1500 cpu.
