Difference between DO vs DQ and AO vs AQ

Hello Experts,

Sorry for the kind of newbie question, but I'm confusing and can't finding the exact difference between DO vs DQ and AO vs AQ modules. Untill now I worked with DO and AO modules and did not use DQ and AQ modules. Can anyone explain me the difference between these modules, if it exists please?

What CPUs are you wrking with?

As you can see from the attached screenshot, developpers of the S7-300 family used DO for digital ouptut module definition, whereas the newer s7-1500 uses DQ for the same type or digital output module. Just a marketing designation issue, all Siemens S7 output modules work in a similar fashion across different families.

1. DO or DQ are used for Digital Output Modules
   Addresses are Q*.*
2. AO or AQ are used for Analog Output Modules
   Addresses are QW**
   

The letter "Q" may stand for "Quotient" -if I remember well- I think I read an article for this long years ago.

My recollection of the early digital electronic classes I attended show that the output of logic gate equations was very often refered to as Q. This might be the source of the newer Siemens DQ and AQ designations.
