Hello CuteWillie Daniel is absolutely spot on with his advise, it would help greatly to get the part number of the IM308, the IM's that you currently have in your ET100U and the IM's that you intend to use to convert your ET100U's to ET200U's. I personally fear that your IM308 is in fact an ancient IM308A as you mentioned ET100U's in the same sentence (then again, you also mentioned Sincec L2 in the same sentence which beongs to the ET200U but NOT to the ET100U). If you do indeed have an IM308A (6ES5308-3UA12), you will NOT be able to use ET200U's on it. Your solutionthen wouldbe to replace the IM308A with an IM308C(assuming you only have ET100U's connected to the IM308). Anyway, give us more detail and we can advise you further (a system Topology sketch would be handy to have too). I hope this helps |

Hello CuteWillie; Since the IM 308 you have and the ET 100 units are both unsupported by the S7 family, it looks like you shloud start thinking about upgrading to ET 200 Profibus-DP slaves. On the following link you will find a presentation on the doifferent families of ET 200, such as ET 200M, ET 200S.... https://www.automation.siemens.com/mcms/distributed-io/en/Pages/Default.aspx Compare their different caracteristics, size, possible installation locations, ampount of data per node... Along with the presentations you will find links to manuals and technical description on these webpages. For example, the ET 200M is based on S7-300 I/O modules (16/32 input/output modules), with a maximum of 8 or 12 modules per node, linked to Profibus-DP with an IM 153-1 or IM 153-2. The ET 200S has a range of "granular" I/Os (small, 1 or 2 channel inputs/outputs) and adds motor starters to its control section; it can be used in hazardous areas as well... Configuring a Profibus-DP network with a S7 CPU is simple and uses inbuilt tools that were not available with S5 CPUs. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier |

Hello again CuteWillie first of all here are the answers to your questions:
Correct
I think you mean IM308 instead of IM318 (a 318 is the IM of anET100U or ET200U), but let's sort out anyhow what is possible and what isn't: An ET100U I/O station has a 6ES5318-8MA12 (which you can NOT use in an S7). An ET200U I/O Station has a 6ES5318-8MB12 or -8MB13or -8MC11 or -8MC12 (these fourare Profibus DP Salves andyou can use them in an S7). In order to be able to use your ET200U I/O stations for theS5, you will need to add an IM308C card to the S5 and configure it with COM Profibus.
No, an IM308A has an EPROM and is configured with COM ET100, an IM308C has a Flash EPROM and is configured with COM Profibus. The 308A EPROM will physically NOT fit into an IM308C and even if it would, it would not work. And here's some more general info: The IM308C is a "real" Profibus DP Master master and does allow you use S7 DP Slaves on it (e.g. ET200M, ET200S etc.). You will need to get it anyhow (to be able to use the ET200U's on the S5),which means that if you were to follow Daniel's advise (upgrade the S5 ET100U's to S7 ET200M's or S's etc.) you will not only end up with a complete S7 solution (and have up to date supported hardware), but you will also save yourself the money for the new S5 ET200U type IM318's (which you will need to buy to "upgrade" the ET100U's to ET200U's). Food for thought anyhow and I hope this helps |

New question by neththi published twice. You can find the second thread with the subject Communication error (S5 -115 U) -308-3UA12 Expansion Unit interface module and et 100u.
