Firmware update CPU1516F-3 PN/DP

Hi,

We are preparing to upgrade the firmware for an S7 1516F-3 PN/DP CPU

CPU1516F-3 PN/DP   6ES7 516-3FN01-0AB0    Firmware versions 1.8.1

The highest firmware available is 2.6.0 can we use this firmware of not?

My fellow worker told me it is not possible to go to the highest firmware because of Hardware differences?

Like a  V1 CPU can only update to a V1 firmware (1.8.1 / 1.8.2 /  1.8.3 / 1.8.4) and cannot be upgraded to a V2 Firmware (V2.0.1 / V2.0.3 etc.)?

But the type number of the CPU stays the same?

What does the HW Functional status mean?  And does this affect the firmware

I know with the 300 series there where diferences with the firmware ? Does this only affect the older series (300/400)

I searched the forum and the Siemens website, but couldn't find this?

Online firmware update with STEP 7 (TIA-Portal)

1. Download the desired CPU update file.
2. Unpack the file by double-clicking the file name.
3. Earmark the CPU in STEP 7 in the device view.
4. In the context menu select the menu command "Online & Diagnostics". If an online connection does not yet exist, STEP 7 will try to establish one.
5. In the folder "Functions" select the group "Firmware Update".
   In the case of a CPU you can select whether you want to update the CPU (PLC) or the display of the CPU.
6. In the sector "Firmware Loader" click on the button "Browse" to select the path to the firmware update files.
7. Select the desired firmware file. The table in the sector Firmware Loader lists all the modules that can be updated with the selected firmware file.
8. Click on the button "Start Updating".
   If the selected file is suitable for the module, the file will be uploaded to the module. This can take several minutes.
   Depending on the module used, the option box "Activate firmware after update" can be edited or not (always activated).

If the option box is activated, the module will accept the firmware after the successful upload and start with the new firmware.

I had allready found that. But because they told me it wouldn't be possible  i asked here.

I think in the past i had the problem with the 1200 cpu a v3 cannot be upgradet to a version 4 firmware? But i don't know if the type numbers where the same ?

So i will just give it a try with the latest firmware.

Hello dendhondt,

the maximum firmware version for your CPU is the 1.8.5.
You can't upgrade the CPU from firmware1.xxx to 2.xxx.

So far I know is there a different architecture and controller.

if he provide the correct Ordernumber (ES7 516-3FN01-0AB0) then is not correct.

The ES7 516-3FN01-0AB0 is a V2 HW which support FW up to V2.6.

The V1 HW is the ES7 516-3FN00-0AB0 and can only be updated to V1.8.5.

The ordernumber is 6ES7 516-3FN01-0AB0

We managed to upgrade the firmware to v2.6
