Actually, if you count automating excel's predecssor, I automated routine tasks using Lotus 1-2-3while in military service. I have automated homes, BBSs, data entry, data retrieval, reporting systems, manufacturing equipment, manufacturing reporting systems, manufacturing downtime audible alert systems ("machine xx is down" over the paging speakers), mid & end of line packaging systems using highly integrated robotics, vehicle dyno testing, clutch engagement simulation testing equipment, and lots of little things. My favorite is automating the home theater system. Harmony Remote Control makes it way too easy! Next favorite is simple on/off controls for home exterior lighting that changes based on lat/lon and knowing the current date. It calculated sunset / sunrise at midnight every day and establishes new off times in the morning and new on times in the evening. Simple solution that does not require a table or access to the internet to obtain current sunset/sunrise times. :) It generates what is known in the home automation community as high WAF. (wife acceptance factor) So, years of automation experience : 21 Years of home automation experience : 12 Years of computer automation experience : 27 Years of enjoyment? All of them.

I was employed as an applications engineer where my role was to engineer contracts from tender through to finshed software, hardware and documentation. After 4 years in this position I was "cherry picked" to look into Object Oriented Design methods for the software and also to develop our first intellegent display system (Intouch based). After 2 years, I was then "cherry picked" again to move into the software design group. Here my duties were to design, maintain and support our own automation control system (Rustronic MK2 system). This involved operating system, device driver and language compiler design and development in 'c' and assembler code. I loved this job; It was chellenging and interesting. Then the company was sold by Alstom and bought by Siemens. Initially things were fine as nothing really changed. Then it was decided in higher management that they would discontinue the Rustronic system and use the S7 system. This resulted in a major change to my job, as there was no longer any design work as the S7 system is designed by I IA in Germnay. So I lost the interesting and challenging work and I am now effectively back to being an applications engineer again, which upsets me a lot. My skills are completely wasted in my current position. It is like asking Michelangelo to paint your house ceiling.
	Programming today is the race between software engineers building bigger and better idiot proof programs, and the universe producing bigger and better idiots. So far, the universe is winning...

On April 2, 2010, Gosling left Sun Microsystems which had recently been acquired by the Oracle Corporation . On March 28, 2011, James Gosling announced on his blog that he had been hired by Google,Five months later, he announced that he joined a startup called Liquid Robotics. as I said before : "many engineers looking to have impressive career like you smiffy""
