how the PLC and HMI communicates !???

Abu-Abdullah Posts: 7 Rating: (1)	Hello Everybody I am new member in this Great Forum so, sorr if my thread is not in its right froum I just need to ask about the processing of the signals (input&output) between the PLC Device & the HMI touch screen I mean : I need to know everything about the processing; such as : how the HMI send the signal to the plc ( fixed or variable ) ? how the signal will be understood to the PLC ? how the PLC will recieve the signal from the HMI and understand it ? how the PLC will send the indication signal to the HMI touch creen to show it ? how the HMI will receive the indication signal which sent by PLC and how it will will be shown to us ? .... etc sorrybut I need the signal processing steps by details and thanx a lot for your help and cooperation

dchartier Grandmaster-Expert Joined: 9/27/2006 Last visit: 9/16/2025 Posts: 12409 Rating: (2717)	Hello Abu-Abdullah; The requirements for data exchanges between a PLC and an HMI station are basically: - a physical connection that is available to both, such as a Ethernet cable, or a RS-485 connection, along with the adequate ports on both; - a common protocol that can exist on the selected physical connection (S7 PLCs and Siemerns HMIsuseIndustrial Ethernetor Profibus-DP); - protocol drivers that will bind the communication interface to the protocol (for example, if you use a PC as an HMI station with Ethernet connectivity, you would need a Softet-IE driver from Simatic Net to allow the standard NIC on your PC to connect a runtime HMI to a S7PLC). This is the first part and is basic requirements for the data exchange. The second part is what is exchanged between the PLC and the HMI. When you program the PLC, you use registers in the CPU to control the process, signal alarm states and collect the system status. This is part of the basis of the PLC program. When you develop the HMI program, in each screen you create graphic interfaces that reflect and send commands to the PLC program through the configured protocol. You do that because every input/output field, alarm display, status icon you generate is linked to a tag, linked to an address of a register in the PLC. So when you write a value in an input field you created to change the setpoint of a PID loop, you transfer this value to the address specified (in the tag definition) in the PLC program. When the PID outpout value changes in the PLC, the HMI recieves the value to display it in the output field you have generated in the actve field. So basically the HMI prepares a list of tags it needs to write to the PLC tag addresses, and values it has to read in the CPU mamory everytime it becomes active (when it has control of the communication link), using the tag addresses configured in both PLC and HMI programs to connect the two. For example when a particular screen is called bu the operator, all read/write values required for that pqarticular screen are requested from the PLC, to show the latest values available and show them on the screen. Best regards, Hristo Mihalev Hello dear Hristo Mihalev first of all, thanks a lot for your reply dear =) sorry to forget the PLC type and the Program which I used The type of PLC is Siemens 1214 as I think and the program which I use is TIA ( Totally Integrated Automation ) it seems like WinCC but in fact is it different I mean same function but a little different in using is anyone understand anything hahahaha I am looking for more details about the processing and how the PLC Device and the HMI Touch Screen can understand each other and sending/receiving data (inputs/outputs) as signals between each other (( in details )) and thanx a lot for your help and support =) Best Regards, Ahmad.

How do you configure an S7 connection for the OPC server of a PC station in STEP 7 Professional V11 (TIA Portal) to access the data of an S7-1200 over Industrial Ethernet? Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier dear Daniel Chartier Thanx a lot dear for all effort that you do to help me I really benefited from you dear but I still reqquire more specifications about the processing of the Input/Output Signals between the PLC and the HMI up to now, we know how to connect the PLC with HMI but I need a little help in the Drivers of the IP Addresses for both PLC and HMI and is it reuired to set the IP address from the TIA or it will find the IP automatically ? also, if there is a little explain with pictures about the TIA, I will be so happy to visit the link and learn how to use that program =)

Best regards, Hristo Mihalev Thanx a lot dear Hristo Mihalev I know that there is a search engine as every fourm have but the problem is : in the term ( expression ) of the thing that you search about it or in the thead names or words which witten before as you know the commercial name is different with the scientific expression such as : (( Inverter & Power Adapter & Power supply & Transformer )) you can use all of these expressions to define the device which convert the 110/220 AC Volts to 12 DC Volts :) (^_^) that is the difficulty in the search engine thanx a lot for your advice and keep in touch dear =) Best Regards, Ahmad.
