How to Configure DP-DP Coupler with S7-1500 and TIA Portal

Hello,

I have a project with a S7-1500 CPU (6ES7513-1AL02-0AB0) with a Profibus Communications Module CM1542-5 (6GK7542-5DX00-0XE0) and would like to configure it to communicate with a Profibus DP-DP Coupler (6ES7158-0AD01-0XA0).

I have configured the PLC part and downloaded the configuration to the PLC but I am wondering how I can download my configuration to the coupler.

I have inserted the coupler in my TIA Portal project through a GSD and configured the adresses and memory types and sizes but I am failing to see how I can download those changes to the coupler?

Is this possible to do through TIA Portal? Do I need to use an MPI PC Adapter?

I think DP-DP coupler does not require any configuration to be downloaded.

A DP/DP Coupler is a 2-sided Profibus slave that you connect to one DPaster on one side, and to another DP master on the other. The exchange of data between the 2 master's uses I/O addressing on the Coupler itself. There is nothing complicated about the setup of the exchanges, as long as you jnderstand the basic principles behind a Coupler.

The following discussion helps a  forum member to setup Profibus exchanges between a S7-1500 and a S7-300  hen between a S7-1500 and a third-party CPU (Beckhoff). It should help clarify most of your issues.

That is a correct configuration for the addressing on one side of the DP/DP coupler (slave #1).

Remember that on the other side (slave #2) the order of the I/O must be reversed (keeping the same size per slot), i.e. start with the 64-byte inputs in slot 1, then the outputs in slot 2.

Thank you, my doubt was just if there was any sort of configuration download  had to perform on the DP-DP coupler, but It seems like all the configuration can be done from the switches on the front, is that correct? I can just change the ADDR switch (for DP1) in the coupler to OFF and the 1 and 2 switches to ON and configure the adress in my TIA Portal Project as 3 and that should suffice?

I'm just trying to make sure because in the DP-DP Coupler manual there is a section about configuring the Coupler using STEP 7 (for configuring adresses and inputs/outputs) and was trying to see if it can be done in TIA Portal, but maybe the best way is to just set the adresses physically using the switches and the configuration as I have it in the image I uploaded previously is enough and is downloaded when I do the usual download to the PLC.

It seems to me you are overthinking the whole process. 

You cannot conigur the I/O addressing of the DP/DP Coupler through the dipswitches. The only addresses you can decide to set that way are the Profibus addresses of each slave on the Coupler. Look again at the screenshot below, and check the sections 4.4 once more.

Ok so if I set the Profibus address to 3 in the dipswitches and set the Profibus address in the software to 3 as well, as in the picture, that should be enough?

I guess my confusion comes from the fact that I am unsure if the configuration for the information that is transferred (64 bytes Input, 64 bytes Output, etc) is stored in the PLC and therefore only a download to the PLC is required?

Maybe the manual is nt explaining the ADDR switc use very precisely, so I willl try to describe it here.

When you decide to ue the ADDDR dipswitches on the DP/DP coupler, the Profibus address selected o the switches become integral to the function of each slave side on the coupler, even in case of disconnection fro the PLC.To do so, set the ADDR switch to OFF, and the Profibus address using the remaining 7 swithes marked 1 to 64 to set the unique slave address of each slave on the coupler. This means the coupler is not depending of an initilization by Step 7 any more. It also means that in your Step 7 program the coupler must be configured with the Profibus addresses set on the switches or it qill not communicate.

If you chose to let Step 7 determine the Profibus address of each slave on the coupler, set the ADDR switch to ON. The remaining numeric switches have mo influence on the Profibus addressing at thispoint. Every time the DP master initates communications it will download the Profibus address to each slave as configured in Step 7.If you disconnect the coupler from the PLC, it loses its address and an initialization through Step 7 is required.

I have never chosen to set the Profibus address of the coupler slaves using the dipswitches, but that is a personnal preference.

When you use the word download, it does not mean the same as an initialization by the Profibus master. You are refering to a download from Step 7 to the PLC load memory, which is required when you program the CPU or modfy the parameters for your application. Do not mix up the two items.

OK I think I understand now.

The Profibus Address of the coupler is determined by the PLC through the Profibus connection, and that is done when the PLC initializes communication.

But just to be sure, the PLC initializes communication with the slaves in the Profibus network cyclically or does it only happen when the PLC is power-cycled, for example?
