How to run script / files on startup

Hi All

The Sources via Google seems a bit confusing.  :)

I want to auto-start a few things at boot. For this example a 3G connection via pppd and a python program.  

So far it looks like this should be done with a script  (file.sh)  in /etc/init.d  

I'm still missing a point. Need some guidance.
