Is S7-1500 successor of S7-300?

Or this replacement is not clear now ? I was attended for some TIA portal training but it seems that is not usable in this time. Maybe in next versions of software. It is very slow and not all functions are implemented in V11... Maybe it will take a lot of time to make functional versions of TIA portal and S7-1500 PLC... Georgio

fritz Diamond Member Joined: 10/7/2005 Last visit: 11/14/2024 Posts: 3027 Rating: (1057)	Hello Georgio my take: The S7-1500 will in the looooooooooooong run be the succesor toS7-300's as well as S7-400's (including H-Systems, PCS7 etc.). It's a brand new design witha high speed backplane and performance that will easily cover all aspects of Automation in which we currently employ 300's or 400's. Don't hold your breath though for a phase out announcement of 300's and 400's, I'd say they have quite some live left in them,are of course still current technology and programmable with TIA Portal too (as well as the good old "classic" Step 7).

Definitelly this first S7-1500 type is the first attempt to replace. As I wrote new TIA portal is for me unusable, because a lot of functions are not possible in today versions. And the same is for new PLC... Will it be availabe to program it without TIA portal ? Only with classic Step 7 ? Georgio

Siemens has no interesse in create a "panic" and knows that a discontinuation of a product line should always been a door to the concorrence. So, I suppouse that Siemens will sold S7-300/400 for a long time (or, at least, while Siemens feels that the customer still would like to buy then).

I'm sure all the functions will be availabe step by step. However, it all likelihood, the S7-1500 with replace both the S7-300 and S7-400 in the fullness of time. However, there is no need to panic. The S7-1500 currently does not support dual redundant H-System, so they cannot drop the S7-400 yet. Even when the S7-1500 is capable of replacing the S7-300 / S7-400, it will not happen overnight. Support for the S7-300 / S7-400 will also continue for some considerable time. Afterall, they are still supporting older systems such as S5. Siemens is doing what any PLC manufacturing company would do - reducing the number of systems that they currently have to manage. I expect that their long term goal is to simply have the S7-1200 and S7-1500 families as current products in the future. Well until the next generation that is.

Aret Posts: 2348 Rating: (264)	S7-1500 has a power from S7-314 to S7-412/414 now. In future, when S7-1518 comes, it will be wider, so in future IF it would be good on the market 1500 will replace both 300 and 400. Siemens guys unofficially say that s7-300/400 won't be announced as phased out at least for 4 years, but actually think it would take even longer.
