Lenord Bauer encoder on a 1FE1082 motor

Trying to configure a Lenord Bauer GEL 2443 encoder connected to a 1FE1082 motor. The encoder is driven by a 360 tooth ring on the motor and is connected via a SMC20 module to a 6SL3120 solution line drive.

Cannot get the thing to work. Alarms 231131 "Encoder deviation, position too large", 231100 "Encoder distance error", 25000 "Hardware fault of active encoder" and 26106 "Encoder not found" are being posted. The wiring between the SMC20 and the encoder has been checked and re-checked. A Heidenhain ROC413 encoder plugged into the SMC20 works, so the SMC20 is not faulty.

The pulses per rev of the encoder have been set at 360, as the encoder should read 1 count for each tooth on the ring it is connected to. Is this correct or should 2048 pulses per rev be selected? Trued this set to both 360 and 2048 pulses but to no avail.

Drive MD parameter 400 is set to 9999 "user select", and this is configured as "Incremental Sin/Cos" with pole position identification and one zero mark.

If anyone has any input as to which parameters should be set and to what value I would be etrnally grateful.
