für Data logging purposes I like to insert a MC in the S7-1200 CPU

6ES7 212-1AE31-0XB0 Firmware V3.x

I can not find any specifications of the maximum size of memory card that I can plug into this CPU, even the SIMATIC data sheet does not give any Information about that.

Can anybody tell me what is the max. size?

My 2013 ST70 catalog has that specific CPU.  Largest memory card shown in the catalog is

24MB 6ES7 954-8LF01-0AA0.

I'm not sure if this is the definitive largest card that can be used but it is the largest one shown.

After some "Experiments":

I try a 2 GB SD in CPU1200 FW 3.x what is not working.

I change Partition of SD to 24 MB using the Windows tool diskpart.exe.

Also this card is still not working. Diagnostic buffer "SD card not accepted"

There are 2 possibilities:
a.) changed Partition of SD is not accepted by CPU. So a generic small SD is necessary.
b.) 24 MB is still to large for FW3.x

I am afraid that data logging with 1200 CPU onto a SD Card is not very useful if you have a large amount of data...

the repartitioning was the problem!
You should never modify a SIEMENS Memory Card in such a way.
No Format with Windows and no modify with other tools.

If i check my 24MB MemoryCard in Windows then it display the following data:

capacity : 32 MB

1 Partiton with 25MB.

 not compatible with V3!

 I was quite sure that this limitations was not valid for S7-1200 any more, thanks for teaching me! 

 only the access limitation in windows explorer was no longer valid 

the cards have a modified MBR and Partiton table which is destroyed with diskpart.

a 2MB Card for S7-1200 have a capacity of 32 MB and 2 Partitons (3MB and 1 MB unused), so is similar to the old MMC of S7-300, same HW Type of card and the capacity is limited with MBR and Partitontable.
