MP277 connection to Remote PC using DNS

agrade Posts: 10 Rating: (2)	Hello, I have a need for a script to read a text file from a shared folder on a remote Windows XP PC. I can do this locally using an ethernet crossover cable. When I went to the customer's test lab, I could not connect to the remote folder. We need to connect through their LAN Routers, because the target PC is not on the same segment. Using a Windows XP machine, we could connect to \\machine\sharedfolder. I understand that Windows CE 5.0 cannot resolve IP addresses in the UNC. On the MP277: We could "ping www.xxx.yyy.zzz" We could "ping machine.customer.com.au" We could not "ping machine" This returned error 53. We could not connect to \\machine\sharedfolder. We did see it attempt to request from the DNS. When we used \\machine.customer.com.au\sharedfolder, we got an error 53 and did not see any attempt to request from the DNS servers. Has anyone else tried to do this ? Also, I have read and checked the FAQ 13336639 and I have searched the forum and only found posts which state a similar problem but do not give a solution.

As far as I know Windows CE does not have a LMHost file - the entries would have to go in the registry and this would be difficult to maintain as they would be overwritten each time the operating system was updated. The DNS server is resolving the name for the Windows XP machine ... as shown above. We only want to read a file into the MP277 from a remote PC. The remote PC does not explicitly need to connect to the MP277 at all. Is it necessary to have the MP277 in the DNS for the network or in the LMHosts file on the remote PC ?

You have to read next web: http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/wce/20/protocols.htm I dont know to much about networks but it seems that Windows CE use NetBios in order resolve the IP adress of the server, and NetBios can't work in layer 3, so the solution is that the panel and the server must be in same network. The most important part is this: NetBIOS Name Resolution for the Network Client Windows CE implements NetBIOS Name Resolution for the Network Client as follows: If no WINS server address has been configured, the Network Client will broadcast a request for the server. You can access servers that are not registered in the WINS server. If a WINS server address has been configured, Network Client will request the appropriate IP Address resolution from the host, If the destination host is registered in the WINS server, the WINS server returns the appropriate IP address. If the destination host is not registered in the WINS server, the look up will fail. NetBIOS is not a routable protocol (i.e.: it will not go through routers without special configuration) so you must configure all equipment to bridge these packets as appropriate. Be careful! NetBIOS broadcasts can affect a WAN networks performance.

agrade Posts: 10 Rating: (2)	Thanks rserrano, Unfortunately that's an impossible solution when we do not have access to the customer's network. The target PC was on a different subnet and they would not set up DNS servers or VLAN for us. We considered using hardware tunnelling to make a VLAN, but it was too expensive, so we bought an Industrial Fanless XP Pro PC and using Wincc Flex Runtime, it works because XP does do DNS name resolution.
