Acceptable line length in PROFIBUS-DP networks What should you watch out for when using the RS485 repeater in PROFIBUS and MPI bus systems? if you have more distance than you can used the OLM. Ethernet Its Normally Depend on the Which Cable you are using Cat6 is support up to 50-60 meter. (Approx.) if more Than that, used Optical Convertor.

G.Konstantopoulos Posts: 6 Rating: (0)	Hello Chetan2490 For Ethenet cables according to standards you can go up to 100m (electrical connection, UTP cables) If you want to go further you can use a simple Ethernet Switch (or HUB) and expand to another 100m. And so on... Is not necessary to directly choose optical (which is more expensive and infrastructure troubling). At the same time if you want to travel Ethernet for some km (on copper cables) you can use SHDSL technology. 2 SHDSL modems back to back can take an Ethernet input from One side and deliver it as Ethernet again to the other end. SHDSL is based on a pair of copper cables (telephone cable) and can go up to 5 km (or so...). Siemens has (or used to have before the Armagedon in Siemens Com) the ULAF+ products which support the Ethernet over SHDSL technology. I think ULAF+ are still available today. Of course there are a lot of other vendors who offer SHDSL (or G.SHDSL) modems today. Don't go to optical so easily. SHDSL is cheaper. Best regards Georgios Konstantopoulos.

You should also Consider EMI& EMC effects while choosing Cable Lengths. if you have time then read this nice Article. Is Your Ethernet Cable Tough Enough?
