You can run a VPN server on a customer PC: OpenVPN http://openvpn.net/ for example. Connecting with the VPN client from the programmers PC will put you on the SimotionD domain/subnet and the connection with Step7 and Scout can be established. The common challenge with implementing any type of VPN access is to work with customers IT department to make sure their Internet firewall will allow network traffic to machine's VPN server. |

OpenVPN server also serves as a DHCP server. When the client (programming PC) connects to the VPN server it get's issued a virtual network dynamic IP address which is configured in server configuration to be on the same subnet as Simotion. There are two possible ways to setup the network: routing vs bridging. Although routing is easier to setup, I found that bridge configuration worked better for Scout remote access. In Scout project NetPro configuration you have to configure VPN server (PC) IP address as a router address, so the controller "knows" where to send communication traffic for programming connection. As far as non static IP configuration we use a DNS service provider: www.dydns.org or www.noip.com. |
