Kev Advanced Member Joined: 6/29/2006 Last visit: 9/11/2023 Posts: 53 Rating: (1)	I have not tried this myself but this is what I think you are refering to: In WinXP, Right click "My Computer" and select properties, Click the "Hardware" tab Click "Device Manager" On the next window click the + sign next to "Ports (COM & LPT)" Doubleclick"Comunications port (COM1)" Select "Port Settings" tab click "Advanced" At the bottom of this window you can choose "COM Port Number" If anyone gets this working then please post back, I believe it is a big issue for many of us and will increase in importance as PC's are being replaced by modern ones without serial ports. Why can't Siemens address this problem, I'm pretty sure many of us would be happy to pay a small fee for a patch to S5 and a useable USB cable? Please.

I had the same problem as well and i made some changes in the parameters and comp port settings and i managed to go online with the PLC through USB. I have attached the steps on hw to do it. Prin Posts: 1 Rating: (0)	To use a usb to serial converter do the following: Go to the website process-informatik.de and download the file "Zusatztrieber fur Step5 fur PG-USB/S5-LAN V1.22" (Go to downloads and then under the MPI/PPI/HMI/Ts-Kabel table, should be S5vir122.exe after you click on the download). When you run that program select English, then usb->serial from the options, which com port you want it to use within step 5 and continue the install. From then on whenever you wish to use the usb serial converter just make sure the correct com port is selected from within S5 (the one you selected during install) and that the USB-serial com port is the same in windows device manager. There is a small bug that causes a blue screen every now and then when you are monitoring variables online for a long period of time (5 minutes), otherwise i never have any connection problems. We have it running on 3 different PC's all with PCMCIA-Serial converters and have tried successfully with a USB-Serial converter. Of course your serial cables need to be the normal TTY converter ones that you would usually use with your old computers
