Trigger tag for Discrete Alarms

Kodknackare Posts: 10 Rating: (0)	Dear fellow users of WinCC (Un)Flexible, it is really true that it's not possible to use a tag of BYTE-type as Trigger Tag for a Discrete Alarm? Do I really have to transfer my perfectly fine DB-BYTE to a memory-consuming WORD to use it as Trigger Tag? Or is there some sort of workaround for this? Best regards

Scott Bronze Member Joined: 10/23/2005 Last visit: 3/31/2020 Posts: 81 Rating: (9)	Kodknackare, If you are using S7 PLC you can make the WinCC Flex tag read in 2 bytes at a time an you are golden. Just make sure of the byte order. when you you tag them. Good Luck

Kodknackare Posts: 10 Rating: (0)	Yes, I am aware of that possibility. But since I dislike that method, because of the risk of unexpected values to be read I prefer to use correct data type. On the other hand, it is easier than writing "stupid" conversions in the PLC... WinCC Unflexible

In WinCC Flexible you are limited to use only WORD type as trigger (and acknowledge also) tag. There are no other ways. Kodknackare WinCC Unflexible I'm sorry, but this writting is some kind of stupid especially in Siemens forums. If you don't like the software you should not use it or write one by yourself.

I enjoy loads of Siemens products and it is my first choice of brand, but when software (and sometimes hardware) has unnecessary limitations it really pushes my buttons.

That is why AB is still kicking there butt over here. If there software and hardware developers can't take ideas from there customers they will never make it. So lose that mentality and answer the questions people ask.

So everybody understood about possibilities of WinCC Flex. But just to finish this thread I want to say - all hardware and software has some possibilities. And somtime we wish to jump above it. Unfortunately, I can say this is impossible. Impossible not in direct word, let's say if you want more - go and buy. Spent your monney. And you are the men, which would be decide if this is so necessary to pay this price. And just to say " I should to prepare stupid convertions inside into PLC is not serious. And Scott about kicking (AB in US, in Europe) - I don't know from where did you took this information. BTW, in my area - my country and all countries around, even you can't compare both brands. In automation equipment everybody preffer Siemens. Finaly, I'll suggest to open new thread instead to continue in this. Best regards Hristo Mihalev

Wulfgar Posts: 42 Rating: (3)	I would have to agree with the WinCC Unflexible; but to be fair I also say AB PanelView Minus instead of Plus. Both HMI programs are very unfriendly compared to other HMI programs I've used. So Darius lighten up. Working on my first Siemens project, not going to go into all the sortcoming of the software but the software does seem to be very limiting in some regurds for no obvious reason. I'm tring to get alarms set up and found the alarms must be DWORD or INT despite the actual alarms being limited to BOOL alarms. I'm used to using an INT value for alarms instead of bits. So how do you setup so the HMI is happy with the addressing and can still address to the bit level in the PLC since DWORD's cannot be used as symbolic in ladder to the bit level? I seem to be able to get it set so the PLC is happy but not the HMI or vice versa. Is it possible get it to work without writing conversion code to get Step7 & WinCC to work together? Thanks, Wulfgar
