Why Tia Portal is deadslow ?

Omer_ Posts: 37 Rating: (2)	Hi , i have Tia Portal V11 + Sp 2 32bit , my computer is new and fast. I wonder , why Tia Portal is so slow ? Sometimes it can connect to HMI , sometimes not. All jobs in program are deadslow. Siemens trying to upgrade this software to faster one ? Or will it be remain like that ? When we will get new update or upgrade against these troubles ?

I have TIA Portal running inside an XP virtual machine with 4 GB of RAM and it is fairly quick. Yes, I have used other automation software from other vendors that is VERY fast by comparison, and yes, it is slow to respond to my input, and it can often sit apparently stuck. However, if you are using outlook, office products, internet exploder, or other software, Portal will be memory hungry and slow way down. With 8 GB of RAM, you should see a significant improvement.

Ok, I'll go for a coffee and come back when it's done openning the project... I´ve used many different SCADA packages and in my experience, TIA Portal is expensive and slow, which means that it´s even more expensive as it needs more programming hours to get the same results. I appreciate the effort their developpers have made and I'm sure they will solve these problems in the near future. However, the year is 2012 and computers are fast and reliable. On the other side, software is getting more complex instead of faster, so the overall result is not very promising. If SIEMENS can't write good software then who can?

Yes they may not be 3000 euro monsters but still prety slick and all I (and every other programmer in my company) can say.: It is slow, it is retardedly slow, it so slow people building the machine started to wonder if I was slacking . It is so slow I got complaints from mechanical engineers that it takes a fricking 5 minutes to open a jaw. It is so slow we asked our next customer that specified TIA .... Are you sure? It is slow, it is so slow it costs money, which is a shame because a lot of features within TIA are very great but the speed is still so slow we programmers shy away from it. Siemens, fix this and you have a prime software development kit for machines but as it is standing now we rather avoid it at almostall costs.

Recently I have written a complex SCL routine in S7(SM), which I decided to migrate to TIA portal. Migration results was 0 erros and 0 warnings. Later that day I decided to exchange my old-fashioned timers inside block interface (TIMER_P to TON). After this change there is no way to open block again. TIA Portal chashes as soon as I click on that block. I have restarted TIA portal 9 times today. Maybe some bug-reporting-applet would be a good idea for Siemens developers? I certainly agree that software-complexity curve is running at the faster slope than the computer hardware possibilities. The result is that we (as industrial SW developers) gain no extra time while migrating to emerging systems. I do appreciate all the effort made on TIA developement, it truly is a nice piece of software, but it obviously needs time to clear all those bugs. Hope V12 will solve most of them.

I open portal, click the program blocks > and then wait up to 30 seconds to see what is in the project. With the speed of computers, and the fact my cpu does not hit 100%, something is throttling the portal speed from within the portal software itself. Perhaps there is so much interprocess communications with the multithreading and such that it causes things to slow down. I don't know. I just know my cpu has more time to give and I'd rather use it than have the software tool be slow.

0_Einstein Diamond Expert Joined: 7/7/2010 Last visit: 9/12/2025 Posts: 16094 Rating: (2515)	It makes me think they sold the DEBUG version of the programming instead of the RELEASE version so everything is working extra hard to detect problems and crash for no reason and give the most useless of faults possible (The system needs to restart....). What I find odd is Siemens actually _improved_ their crash recovery code so it starts portal back up better than in prior versions. That tells you something about their faith in the code.

Gianni_5 Regular Member Joined: 2/28/2012 Last visit: 2/13/2019 Posts: 1 Rating: (2)	I'm running TIA Portal (Update 5) on a machine with an 8-core Xeon (equivalent to, or better than, an i7), with 8 GB RAM and 64-bit Win7. Portal is still drastically slow. I've monitored the CPU, RAM, and disk usage, and its definitely apparent that portal is NOT utilizing all of the machine's resources. While its compiling or doing another lengthy process, every-other processor core (i.e. core 0, 2, 4, 6) gets utilized to aproximately 20%-40%. The remaining cores are idle. My hard disk usage is little to none, so that can't be the bottleneck, either. This shows there's plenty more power left to be utilized. There's got to be some built-in timers that are poorly programmed. Either way, these are not the sort of bugs that thould exist in a release version. For the current update to be number 5 and having this problem still exist, I'm not so faithful that we'll be seeing a fix anytime soon. :( On a side note, if there is some sort of bug-reporting program, I'd be happy to participate in it. At least we'd have the comfort of knowing that Siemens has been informed about the specific problems we experience. -John

I working 2 weeks on TIA and find some little problems. it's really better than V10. but it's not finish. and yes speed of software is a problem. I start new devloppement in TIA portal because Siemens want to stop the S7-200 quickly (Price increase) but TIA do not look very ready. documentation and software have some inconsistency. With step 7 microwin possibility are less but it's working as you expect. But the TIA 12 is not so far away. I hope siemens increase the quality. if not they will have some problem.

The warning message "At the moment there are not sufficient system resources for the application." come up many times. I have also tested it with better hardware. (home pc) Windows 7 (64bit), Intel i7 2.67GHz & 6 GB RAM. It run okay with this specs. But not fast. I have request a better laptop from work, but I hope that Siemens will also improve their TIA Portal software.

People who are in decision are not the ones using crappy tools. That how the world is flipped upside down. Lucky there are alternatives like yaskagawa (vipa) and codesys like products and more. Vipa seams reasonable as it can be programmed by old, good and fast step 7 manager, the last product that was a succesfull in siemens line. Later starting from wincc siemens software is a big failure, together with security issus in their controllers. Im not saying that other vendors are better, but this one is definitly missing a point when it comes to technical side. Well its economy running the world.... for sure?

It is happening to many sw. products. 3 years have passed since this post and here I am with my really slow TIA v15.1 in a 3000 € computer. Everything takes longer than any oher software: opening a DB, opening an image in wincc, etc. Even moving through a wincc image is slow and sloppy in a computer where I can play the latest videogames with almost every graphic parameters set to max. It is unbelievable. My TIA portal V15.1 is working perfect on a HP PROBOOK 4th gen core i7 processor with only 16 GB RAM and 240 GB SSD, its not as perfect and reliable as SIMATIC Manager but its working perfect without any lag.

But whe i read other forums, one way to speed up tia portal, is to add the siemens folder to exclusion list, at your own risk tho. But as soon i had Windows Defender stop checking everything tia portal was doing, the UI feels alot faster, projects loads faster.. Even the Updater fetches the list and parses it in seconds instead of 10 minutes.

skvernland Regular Member Joined: 7/13/2016 Last visit: 11/30/2024 Posts: 4 Rating: (0)	My experience with a Thinkpad P17 gen 2, with Intel I7 processor, 64GB RAM and M2 SSD harddrive is that the TIA Portal V17 is performing okay . Of course Simatic manager is much faster, but TIA does more work for you if you use it correctly. Compared to Visual studio and other brands that use Visual studio as a base for their development software I would say that TIA is a bit... okay maybe a lot behind when it comes to the speed, intuitively user interface etc.. but what should we expect - have a look at the Industry Online Support web portal.. the 90's called and wanted their website back .. All in all Siemens offers great systems, PLC, drives and more that works well together in TIA portal :)
