WORD and DWORD value assign

Hi everyone

I'm quite new to scl. Is there any reason why I can't assign a decimal value to a WORD or DWORD?

I do have to assign for example 16#7. 

My background is in C, Python or Java and there I can assign always decimal values.

Yes the compiler will not accept it as an input for a variable for the type word.

My question is more in the direction why the compiler can't handle it.

For example:

A : Word;

A := 4;

does not work but

A : Word;

A := 16#4

works, but it is essentially the same except the format of the number.

 You should get to know different datatypes in Siemens world. I suggest you to start studying the system manual, to get the basic knowledge.

 Sure I understand that I have to learn a lot more in Siemens world.

,The Problem for me is, that almost every compiler for other languages accept this. for example in C:

short a = 2; (8 Bit)

int a = 3; (16 Bit)

long a = 4; (32 Bit)

long long a = 5; (64 Bit)

and it accepts for everytype the hex and the decimal values. Siemes Datatype don't.

But I did not find a reason why this is not possible for a WORD or DWORD in Siemens world.

What you are expecting is not unreasonable. It must be a quirk of the SCL module which adds SCL coding to Step7 Classic. 

Seeing the '16#' representation does remind you that you are working with a WORD type and not an INT type. But then you could ask about signed and unsigned numbers -- no one forces you to write INT#4 and UINT#4.

I do not have access to SCL for Step7 Classic, so you will have to see if using W#4 makes a difference for you.

The situation looks different in TIA Portal. A sample is attached, coded for CPU313C.

 Thank you for your answer. Unfortunatly Siemens forces to write 16#7. Attached I have three options and only 16#7 works.

I got an answer from Siemens.

The reason is the following:

If IEC check is set, the following rules are applied:

- Implicit conversion of BOOL into other data types is not possible.

- Only the data types REAL, BYTE, WORD, DWORD, DINT, INT, SINT, UDINT, UINT, USINT, TIME, LDT, DTL, DT, TOD, WCHAR and CHAR can be converted implicitly.

- The bit length of the source data type may not exceed the bit length of the target data type. A WORD data type operand, for example, cannot be specified at a parameter at which the BYTE data type is expected.

If IEC check is not set, the following rules are applied:

- Implicit conversion of BOOL into other data types is not possible.

- Only the data types REAL, LREAL, BYTE, WORD, DWORD, LWORD, SINT, INT, DINT, LINT, USINT, UINT, UDINT, ULINT, TIME, LTIME, S5TIME, LDT, DTL, TOD, LTOD, DATE, STRING, WSTRING, WCHAR and CHAR can be converted implicitly.

- The bit length of the source data type may not exceed the bit length of the target data type. A DWORD data type operand, for example, cannot be specified at a parameter at which the WORD data type is expected.
