Field PG M2 - Is it possible to put into that PG SSD hdd?

I would like to refresh that topic a little bit.

We have two Field PGs in our company. One is a newer M4 and one an old M2 with WinXP, 2GB RAM and 60GB hard drive. We would like to upgrade that old one so we would be able to use it with new software TIA. My plan is to install 2x4GB DDR2 RAM and new hard drive.

And here is my quetion. Is it possible to put into that PG SSD hdd? I know that there is SATA interface but it is SATA "I" where all of new SSDs has "III". Does anyone done it with success? Has some experience to share? Advice a drive that is working.

Socondly I am planning to install 64bit OS. I thought about Win7Pro but I will need to use virtual machine with XP for old software.

Windows XP is not optimal for SSD, so look at WWW how to optimize the settings for SSD or use the SSD - manufacturer tools for optimal settings. (Switch off prefetch, Switch off index, Switch off defrag).

Also, XP do not Support TRIM, so you have to TRIM time by time the SSD with external tools.

Importand is also the partition start Cluster. Please check WWW how to do the Partition correctly.

Hint. If you do Partition of the new SSD with a Windows 7 - PC (i.e. as external drive), then Partition is already good for SSD. If you just do Partition with XP, then it is not good for SSD.

For testing installation you may use the manufacturer tools or "AS SSD Benchmark".

To incerase speed and lifetime, use a SSD that is large enough (50 % free space is advisable).

I use SSD in Field-PG M for years without any problems.

I use:

OCZ Vertex 3

Samsung 830, 840.

The SSD will not reach full speed because of SATA I but it will run much much much faster than any HDD.

I believe that you installed Windows 7. Did you?

I found information that there are drivers for Windows Vista but what about Win 7? Did you use win XP and Vista drivers and it worked? Or did you get Windows 7 drivers? Does Siemens support can help with that?

It will be used by maintanence service as a second PG for troubleshooting only :)

The Field-PG M with my new SSD is still XP (original Siemens Installation)!

Ask Siemens Hotline for W7 - drivers for your PG - type.

Sometimes, they can deliver drivers for your PG without announcing that in the product Support, so give them an ask.

BTW: SSD do not need a driver.

Edit:
As far as I know, there is absolutely no Vista - Support for PG and Simatic - Software.
