I know that not all laptops are intrinsically safe. I found one of the definitions as. I think also that it is not needed to be intrinsically safe because you will download/upload/monitor your program usually where the PLC is installed which is not in the field. Only IS I/O modules are located in the field.

If you would like to use PC in zone 1, you can use SIMATIC PC (Ex) or go through STAHL Products. With SIMATIC PC (Ex.) you can download SCADA / HMI software plus ES and use it as local engineering station. SIMATIC HMI Panel PC Ex Hope this helps.

Classified panels are classified when they are closed not when they are open and for sure you should open them to handle your PLC. I mean there are other things to take care of even when you have what so called intrinsically safe laptops. In a good design for oil and gas and petrochemical industries, all PLCs,RTUs, Remote IOs and even field instruments should be accessed remotely from a decent control room. Anyhow, you can use that thing if you really need it. But still some stand alone PLCs are not connected. I personally prefer to go for SIEMENS laptop. As a part of manadatory specs. I initiated the thread. Thank you for the replies Regards, Vijay
