I met there a guy, whu tried to convince me, that their poduct (VIPA PLC) is so so great, even better than Siemens. I don't really know what to think, so I would like to ask you to share your good or bad experiences with this mark. Thanks pici_c

Late Platinum Expert Joined: 1/7/2006 Last visit: 11/17/2023 Posts: 2705 Rating: (318)	Hi, You can not rely on the vipa CPUs, they have not the fastest CPU, that is the CPU 319 from Siemens. They lift on the success off Siemens with STEP7. The versions of the vipa CPU are never the same, they don't do a system test, thats is why you could have a new version in one day.... They copying everything, but they make a small part on another way so that it is not possible to sew them. There are a lot of items where they have almost the same things, but it is not the same and the software is not compatible. They don't have listings/marks on several equipment, GERMAN and ENGLISH LLOYDS, BUREAU VERITAS, UL and so on, so you could use them not on several places. (For the Siemens equipment there are almost 35 listings). There where I have seen the vipa CPUs they where appearing and disappearing the same way. They don't have Safety modules or CPUs and also no PROFINET..... The question is how long they could stay on the market, they have now for a long time the same equipment and Siemens is going further, for example with the IM151-8PN CPU for a nice price. Of course we are living in a free world but look some further then the price..... !

Zenon_EMEA Posts: 42 Rating: (5)	Hi, There is a place for everyone on the market and everyone has to decide for it´s own if he can substitude Siemens with VIPA. We have trialed them and came to the conclusion not to go for the CPU´s and also not for certain I/O modules. Even when the performance data and the price is incredible. VIPA PLC´s are on the marked for a while and in the early days most of the developers where former Siemens developers. First the Bad things from our experience: Communication and Compatibility is not as compatible as they tell you. I know cases where several Firmware upgrades where needed to get it close to what it was meant to do. I/O cards: I got constant messages from my friends and collegues in the field that the have damaged cards. Especially Analogue cards. The integrated CP in the big VIPA CPU is a virtual one based on LINUX which is not compatible at all with the Correponding Siemens one. Do not get me wrong I love Linux If something is going wrong with the communication and hardware, there support is heavy loaded so do not expect a fast answer or solution. Even worse if you have mixed Hardware VIPA/Siemens. Then it is nearly impossible to nail any side down, while none of them wants to be responsible. If you use a VIPA CPU and you have no MMC inserted you have to be aware that your code will dissapear within 2-8 Month into the Nirwana, while there is no buffer battery installed just a condensator. So do not use it on temp powered equipment or use MMC. Now the good things from our experience: Much better value for money and this is what sometimes drives the decission if margin is small and an issue. Much more usable Memory for code and also better performance data if on a single PLC system without any HMI or SCADA. Some of the equipment VIPA has on the catalog is just not(yet) available for Siemens. S7-200 style I/O´s which work on Ethernet for example. Profinet is not an issue for us now and therfore we have a few VIPA´s in the Plants. Resume: We had to learn it the hard way where we can use them or not. The have there place and right of existance like SAIJA-Burges ore other Siemens Clones. We have about ~150 installations done with SIEMENS and ~10 with VIPA. This explains wher e the nishe is. Of course VIPA has not got all the Certifications but they have the CE-Mark which makes it usually usable nearly everywhere exept from Naval, Militay, Space and US installations. SIemens got a lot of Certificates and rightfully wants the money paided back which has been invested. I would not call VIPA a copy of Siemens with a bit of own knowledge attached. The major problem of VIPA is that they come out with the products without proper evaluation tests and therefore run into trouble. Anyhow, everyone can judge for himself as we did. You can even order a cit for evaluation to judge for yourself. Markus
